प्राचीन भारतीय ग्रन्थों में इन्दु, नयन, गुण, वेद, शर, रस, ऋषि, वसु, इत्यादि शब्द (क्रमशः 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, ...) संख्या निरूपित करने हेतु प्रयुक्त हुए हैं । ऐसे शब्दों को भूतसंख्या कहते हैं । इसके बारे में, और विशेष करके शून्य से सम्बन्धित अद्यतन शोध लेख के लिए नीचे की कड़ी पर देखें ।
बाबू देवकीनन्दन खत्री के उपन्यास "भूतनाथ" में एक दरवाजे में लगे ताले को खोलने हेतु चाभी (कुंजी) का प्रयोग कैसे करना है, इसे इस प्रकार दर्शाया गया है -
दक्षिण ऋषि वसु वाम, पुनरपि चन्दादित्य इमि ।
पुनि इमि गनहु सुजान, जौं लौ वेद न पूरहीं ॥
