Hi,

Yep, and I'm already kinda excited. :-) So, how's everybody else
getting there and where are you staying?

And does anybody know how I could go about getting tickets to a
Gridiron game on the Sunday? SF are away at Atlanta, but Oakland are
at home. Can you get to the Oakland Coliseum on the BART? Or is there
another one that's easily accessible?

OK, this is about as Tech Meetup as, well, something that's not very
Tech Meetup, so can I suggest you direct replies off-list, please? ;)

I've tentatively got agreement to do a talk from one of the worlds
authorities on the social web - Chris Messina.

http://factoryjoe.com/blog/about/

He is at the heart at all that is good about the emerging open and social
web and sits on the boards for most of these activities.

I suggested a virtual talk at some point as he is from SF and i doubt we'd
have a budget to fly him over etc (a choice between that and beer/pizza!).

Is a virtual talk something you have tried before?

Steven, nice - chris looks like a great speaker for this. We haven't done a virtual talk but it's something that we can figure out. There's a couple of east european companies that would like to skype in and do a presentation. So we must figure out how to do it without it sucking for everyone.

In terms of travel budgets - travel within UK is easy enough to cover - bringing speakers up from London etc. International travel is less easy right now - here are the options:

-if the techmeetup community do a vote and show that a speaker is really worth bringing over, we can probably manage to cover expenses.
-for other less well known, or niche topic speakers, I want to get further sponsorship to put together a pot of money for travel expenses (any potential sponsors you can think of, email me)

Just so you can see what's going on from our side.

Hi,

As far as I remember, you can get to Oakland Colosseum from the BART.
However, I do suggest renting a car, since most of the places in SF
Bay needs a car to get to.

Hope it helps,
Ken Hu

Wow, Chris Messina, that would be most awesome.

For virtual talks, would it be possible to have two projectors, one so
we can get a full screen of the speaker and the other for the slides?
I don't know what technologies could do this, though I'm sure it could
be possible, and IMO such an arrangement would be be advantageous for
such a forum as the Techmeetup.

From his front page:

"I value openness, transparency, honesty, respect and passion"

are we sure we want to bring someone here to corrupt the masses with such values?

Hrm, I don't know about that, but I'd like to think the advantages of his talk would outweigh the disads.. As long as we're all forewarned and can thus fortify our minds against any vicious propaganda towards such terrible schools of thought he espouses.

oh, and in my other mail, s/someone/somewhat

i know him if we need an intro

danger though, if people start sharing stuff and being open and demanding transparency and questioning authority there could be a rebellion or someone might get rich or change the world

gracious, yes, be forewarned

That might read like an episode of the Twilight Zone tho'.
