chris or others, can you suggest a portable audio player which can
handle .ogg? i looked down this path a couple of years ago, but didn't
find too much - iriver maybe?

rockbox: http://www.rockbox.org/ is an open source firmware for a range of mp3 players. very good, have used it myself on 2 machines now for over 2 years.

The iAudio players all play ogg files.

I've had 2 irivers and both handled ogg fine
