Is there a decent wiki that meets these criteria:    ???
  1. easy to install
  2. open source
  3. has a decent text editor (ie not using markup)
    1. insert images (and image handling) is easy
    2. insert link to other wiki pages: something decent
      1. maybe drop down list
      2. maybe several: my recent pages, recent pages, all pages in my 'workspace'
    3. Upload files
    4. usual bold, bullets . .
    5. Horizontal line
    6. {I can do without decent tables]
  4. Good discussions
  5. Good notify
  6. Good history
  7. good permissions model
  8. pref: several instances off one install
3 is really the problem.

Though we had something with Social Text, but not quite there for 1, nice editor, then whammo: 'sorry, to upload an image you need to use the advanced editor (ie markup)'         :-(

Media Wiki claims to have some WYSIWYG editors as plug ins or hacks.  Any feedback on this?

Wikispaces on our server would be great.

  • Who's your perfect lover killed wikispaces for me
  • As well as someone hacking in and editing under my name
  • As well as the syntax being unique - wish it could be the same as mediaWiki so I could easily copy and paste content across wikis.

I have not tried 'Hayes' or dekiwiki yet but when I get the 'time',
this is a wiki I certainly want to try because it looks very
interesting and I have only read positive reports about it. Is
anybody using it now and can give feedback?

Using a wiki is simple. Installing a wiki on a web server may not be
as simple because
you have to decide how to configure and integrate the web server and
wiki application.

Our nonprofit uses open source technology that has all of the features
you described.
I suggest that you try our free teacher wiki. Once your familiar with
the wiki, you can
download the open source software and open source web server (which by
the way is the most widely used web server on the web)

You can also copy your wiki content from our nonprofit site server to
your own server anytime your ready.

Our nonprofit free teacher wikis http://www.K12.bz

Open source wiki http://www.jspwiki.org

We are more than happy to answer any questions

Thanks Michael
I had a look at WikiMatrix http://www.wikimatrix.org/show/JSPWiki to see the JSP wiki features.
WYSIGYG editing is a plugin, so on this site where it is not installed I could not test it.
I have created an account on your wiki, but it needs activating.

I should be clear about my need: real simplicity of use.  I hesitate to say Intuitive (this is so subjective)  We will have several hundred if not thousand users, and I just want it to work - without markup.  :-)

Following is a quote from the first line help pages, from from your wiki -  http://helpingstudents.org/JSPWiki/Wiki.jsp?page=Help:

Adding pictures

You can embed any image in the wiki code by putting the image available somewhere on the web in one of the allowed formats, and then just linking to it. For example, this is an inlined PNG image: http://www.ecyrd.com/~jalkanen/test.png .

If you specify a link text ([this one here|http://example.com/example.png]) it becomes the ALT text for those who either can't or don't want to view images.

The list of accepted image types depends on the Wiki. See the SystemInfo page for a list of the different image types.

Pictures

This teacher wiki also uses the Image plugin to gain more control over the image placement and attributes.

To force a flush after an image, use \ \ \ (that is, three consecutive backslashes instead of two).

Am I being unreasonable in wanting first line help that does not talk about forcing a flush?  I'd like to see users insulated from this.  :-)  [And I know I have been guilty of this in our own help, we are not squeeky clean . . . either!!].

In our user base, a quality text editor has been a priority.  We have created a version of the dojo editor for our current system.  This uses some nifty javascript etc etc
  • Toolbar stays at the top of the screen when you scroll down.
  • Editing box just gets bigger and biger.
  • Users insert sound, links and flash from a simple entry screen.
BUT- the problem is wikimarkup.  We can't just put in our editor where wiki markup is concerned.

My buddies do about one install of something a week.  Wordpress, drupal, moodle, media wiki, interact, gallery2 etc etc.  Some OS apps do it nice.  (Like WP).  Others, you get half way through and they say "Sorry you need to install XCVB plugin and configure your RTYUI to do RTYU" . . .

Your work looks good Michael.  You are working with kids who can find their way through all this easily.  I'm not so lucky.  :-)

The search continues.

Dediwiki - Wow.  Thanks Moira.  On cursory glance it looks quite nice and is definitely heading in the direction I would like.  I could actually add a few bits without going out of the editor, image uploaded OK.
[Was not sure what a subpage concept is, but this could be cool - for our uses, I would like to see users able to easily work in a small pond of pages, say 30-60 total with it easy to create quick links between them etc etc]

I am going to hang around wiki matrix and see what I can find.  I will report back.

Hmm.  Some coding (a month??) and we could develop a really nice plugin for media wiki.  I wonder would my bosses do it.  ??

Derek...

take a look at MoinMoin as well... http://moinmoin.wikiwikiweb.de/

they have one of the best WYSIWYG integrations out there (TinyMCE I think) as well as a lot of the features that you list.

Brent.

Cool Brent.
Just to raise a smile: I did a session on wikis on Thursday for our open day, and you are now a case study with our little foray into wikis in 2006.  I'll be asking soon if you want to be cited or anonymouse for the website.

I'll try moinmoin.

Hmm, Bliki.  :-)  I like it.

My next question is this:

Trying to save us some work here.

Does anyone know od a Mediawiki inistallation I can visit with Tiny MCE or FCKeditor up and running?

My latest questions:
is it possible to use an editor easily to quickly update content on a page with tables - even if you use the usual editor to develop the tables in the first place.
Is there a cludge to enable u[ploads of multiple images to MW? (A quick surf says no)
