At the TALO Swapmeet in Adelaide and at the Mini-TALO SwapMeet in
Wollongong recently it was mooted again about what was coming out of
discussions regarding TALO's active role in progressing the use of
networked technologies, e-learning and the ways in which to actively
engage a bewildered audience.

I spoke of my enthusiasm for a HK visit with poly-technics and
academia involved and a number of other suggestions included "Tag and
Look Outside" or "let's go to The Blue's Roots Festival" . It's
obvious that the interests of some differ from the priorities of
others. T he point was to enjoy the moment and I did. It was far more
rewarding that a 120 external hard-drive will ever be. One's handy ,
the others integral.

I'd like to place this suggestion in the in box and I'll post this re-
post to the FLNW group also.

I spoke with Leigh at length about the perceptions of others of the
TALO group / network / individuals - of the interests, the strengths,
the convictions and the enthusiasm of members hungry for information
on the latest and greatest of what works and what's cool in the e-
learning / mlearning / networked world.

We spoke of where to now, how to grow the network, how to realise
Common and how to match wealth with stealth.

I returned from TALO with two tasks in mind ; one to thwart another
boring conversation about open vs. closed and PLE's vs LMS's.

The other to introduce you to the concept of visiting a series of
communities in the Philipines where the internet is mainly mobile,
where mesh networks and industry economy runs on skype and free
ranging. Where the Embassy throws partys and where coups and clans mix
magnificiently.

I'd also like for you to make welcome a friend of mine Doikno Pasilan
who shall remain for you only a Google search away.

We are invited to visit the Palawan province of the Philipines and
interact with a number of key educational organisations prior, during
and after the trip, interacting using the principles that Nancy White
spoke and acting with an embracing sense of technology stewardship -
both ways.

I'd like to think that you can picture us all - whoever's got the guts
to make the journey physically - sitting in the forecourt of our hosts
resort - http://bambua-palawan.com/images/cottage2b.jpg

Here's on character who figures that his contribution is a learning
journey for his students only a series of clicks away;

[10:19:36 PM] Alexander Hayes says: hi Graham
[10:19:56 PM] Graham Wegner says: evening alex
[10:20:02 PM] Alexander Hayes says: hows things
[10:20:46 PM] Graham Wegner says: not bad but always seem to be busy
[10:20:48 PM] Alexander Hayes says: remember at the TALO swapmeet when
I spoke about the possibilities of hosting a Future of Learning In A
Networked World in Asia
[10:21:22 PM] Graham Wegner says: yes HK was your suggestion
[10:21:39 PM] Alexander Hayes says: I spoke about a friend of mine who
is from Palawan in Thailand
[10:22:23 PM] Graham Wegner says: palawan - is that a city or
province?
[10:22:32 PM] Alexander Hayes says: yes - HK is an option however many
people stated it was a eurocentric idea and not at all challenging or
of any real social magnitude
[10:22:55 PM] Alexander Hayes says: http://bambua-palawan.com/gallery/
[10:23:08 PM] Alexander Hayes says: it's a province
[10:23:19 PM] Graham Wegner says: hey, Adelaide ain't that exotic
either but it's where the people can get to
[10:23:51 PM] Graham Wegner says: looks awesome
[10:23:53 PM] Alexander Hayes says: I got in contact with Doikno today
and he was very receptive of the idea of a group of TALO members
visiting his community
[10:24:06 PM] Alexander Hayes says: Adelaide was great
[10:24:15 PM] Graham Wegner says: how wired is palawan
[10:24:47 PM] Alexander Hayes says: I spoke with Doikno about the
whole concept of internet as PLE and networked learning and he was all
for it
[10:25:01 PM] Alexander Hayes says: Palawan is a mobile mixture ;
manila is flat out
[10:27:03 PM] Alexander Hayes says: did you see the links in the TALO
group to the Breeze recordings
[10:27:24 PM] Graham Wegner says: not yet - where - in the wiki?
[10:27:33 PM] Alexander Hayes says: yes
[10:27:39 PM] Alexander Hayes says: I'm added the links there
[10:28:05 PM] Graham Wegner says: excellent
[10:28:29 PM] Graham Wegner says: can i get a reactive idea from you -
being an artist and all
[10:29:04 PM] Graham Wegner says: i'm going to do an art lesson with
my class tomorrow and haven't decided what to do yet - any gut
suggestions?
[10:29:14 PM] Alexander Hayes says: would you be willing to
"technology steward " a group of students in manilla / Palawan
before / during / and after a FLNW2 visit to the Philipines ?
[10:29:53 PM] Alexander Hayes says: gut suggestion is flight - paper
planes that they get to choose and fly - analyse the designs, the
shapes, the mathematics
[10:30:09 PM] Graham Wegner says: i saw that term on Nancy's slides
and i reckon it fits really well with what a lot of us are wanting to
achieve
[10:30:26 PM] Graham Wegner says: ha- they're doing that in science
already!
[10:31:13 PM] Graham Wegner says: I'll say tentative yes - during
would depend on a few factors family wise.
[10:31:21 PM] Alexander Hayes says: dang - perhaps environment prints
- shape rubbings off different surfaces to build up a collage
[10:32:15 PM] Graham Wegner says: now that's good - get them out of
the classroom, experimenting with different textures and media
[10:32:26 PM] Alexander Hayes says: I'm factoring that Manila is too
far away and that you are "bringing" your students through a virtual
trip to the Philipines with real connections made via the FLNW group
[10:32:29 PM] Graham Wegner says: thanks, I'll do that
[10:33:02 PM] Alexander Hayes says: no worries - link it to intaglio
and relief print making - part of arts curricula
[10:33:03 PM] Graham Wegner says: count me in then.
[10:33:21 PM] Alexander Hayes says: ok - so thats one.
[10:33:46 PM] Alexander Hayes says: I'd like permission to publish
this conversation minus the aforementioned email bit
[10:34:07 PM] Graham Wegner says: i'm going to do something with Doug
Noon later in the year - he's someone we should try and get involved
TALO wise.
[10:34:15 PM] Alexander Hayes says: for sure
[10:34:30 PM] Alexander Hayes says: invite him to contribute to Google
group, wiki etc.
[10:35:03 PM] Alexander Hayes says: better go muster up some feedback
[10:35:14 PM] Alexander Hayes says: speak soon and thanks again for
having me stay

Reproduced with permission.

What would you add to this conversation ?

Have we a seed of an idea here ?

Who's in for FLNW2 ?

i'd be really keen... 'specially if the inside/outside/ple/lms boredom can be confiscated at customs. listened in on adelaide, but as of yet skype lacks any encrypted pheremone transmission protocols and drinking beer online regardless of your 'free as in beer' operating system still sucks.

thatched roofs are always a plus in my book too.

Alex, I have been all for this since you suggested it back at the TALOswapmeet05. You can certainly count me in too - as Sunshine was born in the Philippines so we would love to go for two reasons.

I think it would be good to call it FLNW2 and have it coordinated through TALO. I know quite a few people around the world who really regret missing the FLNW in New Zealand and I can be certain they would make sure not to miss number 2.

I would like to extend a big warm welcome to Doikno as well, and appreciation for this offer. I know most people on this list only dream of visiting the Philippines, this offer makes it possible.

a series of communities in the Philipines where the internet is mainly mobile,
where mesh networks and industry economy runs on skype and free
ranging.

Sounds too good to be true! Clearly we have a lot to learn from this situation. The opportunity to see this in action is enough for me!

Keen as mustard!

Sheesh, count me in!!! It would blow my mind to be able to bring in
stories of technology stewardship from our friends in the Philippines.
Lets go on to Thailand too, while we are at it! Holy Moly!

yes - thailand as a chaser sounds good. could john organise a trip down the mekong visiting those people we tried to link in with while at his place? that would be KEWL. (and miz kylie if you think you're missing this one you're mistaken - i'm going to FORCE you to save up.  you too, Patterson).

maybe we need to think along the lines of "survivor" - take in no technology and see how long we last before the cybourgeoise among us beg to be let off the island/canoe/karaoke team building activities...

game?

Thanks for the feedback folks.

I spoke with Trish Everett from Parngurr Community School in the Great
Sandy Desert by Skype tonight ( its 1.37am) who indicated that as an
AICS school Principal working with ESOL indigenous students that she
is definetly joining the FLNW 2 group to Thailand. She is stuck in
Newman which is three hundred kms from the school due to rain.

Trish will be working with Chris Harvey on an open FOSS scope for
their school which extends upon the PodMob and MobDeadly projects
still underway. Linux and Unix installs on a patchy wireless satellite
server with local cache and intermittent streaming. Podcasting to the
world shortly. Sounds familiar and inspiring.

I've invited Trish and Doikno to join a Skype cast next week recorded
by Stephan and mixed out as voggs and mp3/4 for those purists needing
a health mix. The intent is to introduce these people to the purpose
of TALO and provide you with an idea of Manila and Palawan province
and how sister technology steward schools can grow from respective
media wiki installs, mesh mobile networking, cultural and business e-
learning disonance and the odd bit of spoonerisms and Embassy
assonance.

The idea is to grow a wikieducator presence with FLNW 2 and media /
funding associations scoped and cleared with all respective and
involved organisations as a TALO controlled activity with Commonwealth
of Learning primary host. I have lots of Embassy links and will make
application myself as an educator and artist for funding to fly to
Manila. Hosting and scheduled visits to provinces, islands, schools,
polytechnics, universities and networked groups will be at the advice
of Doikno our guide and travel mentor.

Doikno is a practising and renowned installation / mixed media artist.

Hi Rose,

Thailand is definetly on the cards. John has indicated that he will
seriously consider an association with FLNW 2 provided he gets some
mobile mesh buy in. I can see the two facettes of this visit to both
locations working nicely with the ability to work directly with
schools and communities and cultural groups beyond our general TALO
hotel and buffet breakfast scope.

The future of learning in a networked world would be a bleak one if we
were constantly chucking tantrums in Asia. We, as nancy suggests have
the will and the way to learn ourselvs an awful lot to apply upon
return.

Palawan is a paradise with a tough core.

Our "holiday" would be one of critical resonance and filled with
community engagement.....I know it will.

No luminarys. No guest speakers.

We will all be in the same jeepney.

Thanks Brent.

Time to talk turkey with Commonwealth of Learning. We have more than
five definites. Embassy intro's begin at twenty so we will see who
fills the other fifteen seats. Dropped an event tab to wikieducator.

I'd appreciate if you can find out the agenda for COL dropping funding
for Australia. .....speak with Leigh or where COL fits and TALO's
intent.

Mindful that the resort sleeps 15. Diokno owns a house on Palawan and
the community will happily host anyone as part of FLNW 2.

Diokno's partner Ruth is contacting Embassy's in Manila. I'm sick of
Googling this. Can we grow an FLNW2 page snd begin the visual and
media medic journey like FLNW 1 ?

No guest speakers. No luminarys. We are all in the same networked
canoe.

Done.

We can add image and intent blurb to wikieducator page. Page talk for
planning.

We need sponsors for twenty flights to Manila and Philipines. Hosting
assured in Manila and Palawan.

John will update us on Thailand and Mekong possibility.

Life suprises ? I've got a workshop in Parnngurr in June, baby due in
August, wedding in NZ in Sep. and this trip sometime between then and
the end of semester 1 2008.

Thats my deadline. Term 2 I'm fully regional.

Woot !

This sounds a very interesting proposition. I was one of those people
Leigh talked about who felt deprived not having been able to join you
in NZ - BTW congrats to all involved in that - the ripples continue to
come my way and make me even more envirous.

Is there a place for a newcomer to the group? I would be particularly
interested in this if as you suggest Alex the timing might be after
Sept 2007 and before April 2008.

I went to the wiki and read through the content.
I would love to participate.
I also read through Alexander's recent post and felt awfully bad for Alex and those who felt they needed to complain in an uncivil manner.
I doubt my boss will allow me to fly to the Phillipines, so is there any way I can join in from afar?
Do I list a topic I would like to engage others in on the listserv?
Is there a planning committee/chairperson for this event? Or is the wiki the place to go for news/info, etc?
Sorry for all the questions....
