It is getting bigger and bigger and difficult for me to find what I need when I need to find something

and I also would like to ask if anyone of you would like to give me some good example of delicious use in education or just your delicious account so that I could that as a conversation starter to show the teachers here how to use delicious more effectively

Or just some tips you would like to share with teachers here iN China

5 how would you organise your delicous ?
6 do you often just store things in your delicous but seldom come back to read ?
7 what are the disavantage of using delicous

Hi Leo,
I checked my del.icio.us account http://del.icio.us/bee and found out
you are already part of my network :-) I also must find some time to
categorize and organize my tags and entries. This is the beauty of
tags - they allow you put your socks in the scarf drawer but when you
have an important number of socks, you open a sock drawer - but can
keep them eventually in the scarf drawer provided they share some
common characteristics :-)
At the SMiELT session <http://dekita.org/smielt> you have enrolled at,
social bookmarking is one of the topics
<http://dekita.org/smielt/primer/syllabus/week-3-networking/#delicious>

See Tutorials:
<http://dekita.org/smielt/primer/tools-and-tutorials/#bookmarking>

See readings:
<http://dekita.org/smielt/primer/reading-list/#socialbookmarking>

A forum has been opened to discuss it
<http://dekita.org/smielt/forum/groups/social-bookmarking/questions-about-social-bookmarking>

so it would be great if you could post your reflections and questions
in there as well so others can reflect and try to come up with a
solution :-)
The more perspectives, the better.
Warm regards from Brazil,
Bee

Hi Leo,

Here's the deal.

Forget using categories. Everything you get and put in a 'folder' gets
lost eventually.

Select all suggested tags and add a few more.

Use your del.icio.us like you use soso.com or Google if they'll let
you in......like a brain engine.

Your brain works the same as a search engine.

It's all in the one pot.

No one creates the same subsets or folders so forget thinking you can
mirror any of our del.icio.us accounts and get the same results.

now to address your questions ;

1 when did you begin to use Delicous ?

By logging in.

2 how did you find out this tools ?

In TALO.

3 how often do you use this ?

All the time.

4 if you were asked to recomend this tool to your coworker how would
you do that ?

By SMS. send your co-worker your delicious username.

5 how would you organise your delicous ?

I dont........ I let others organise it for me.

6 do you often just store things in your delicous but seldom come back
to read ?

About 95% of the time.

7 what are the disavantage of using delicous

It makes me feel better. i can rest easy that the website that I once
read last year that had something to do with CSS and Wordpress will
probably be exactly where i tagged them - in 2007, wp + css.

Hey! I found it !!!!

Hi Leo,

I created a lesson for my students on using del.icio.us, starting at p. 9 here

Hi

http://markzspace.blogspot.com/2006/12/using-delicious-effectively.html

I find the best way to find stuff in my delicious (2500 items) is to use the notes field effectively and to use that as an addition to tagging -- if I cant find an item by tag, then I search my delicious.

I am a consultant (mostly) and my work life relies on being able to find bookmarks in delicious, so searchability is important and thus I do (try to) devote efforts to making the notes and tags work effectively.

my delicious account is mvh

Hi Leo.

Here are my answers to some of your questions:

At 06:22 PM 2/8/2008, you wrote:

Some questions :

1 when did you begin to use Delicous ?

2 how did you find out this tools ?

Not sure!

3 how often do you use this ?

Several times a day.

4 if you were asked to recomend this tool to your coworker how would you do that ?

Suggest they open a delicious account and see for themselves. (Like many web 2.0 tools it's hard to explain the advantage they offer. Only when you do it yourself do you really understand why they are useful.)

5 how would you organise your delicous ?

Like Bee and Alex, I don't. I find that I can find things again using tags.

6 do you often just store things in your delicous but seldom come back to read ?

I would come back to retrieve and or read something in delicious about once a week.

7 what are the disavantage of using delicous

If you have regular Net access there are no disadvantages I can think of.

My delicious account is http://del.icio.us/mikecogh

1 when did you begin to use Delicous ?

before it was owned by Yahoo.

2 how did you find out this tools ?

don't recall ...

3 how often do you use this ?

every day.

4 if you were asked to recomend this tool to your coworker how would you do that ?

I often talk about the benefits of developing "organisational" or project oriented tags for sharing found resources online between colleagues, coworkers, and networks.

5 how would you organise your delicous ?

make it up as you go along... or see above.

6 do you often just store things in your delicous but seldom come back to read ?

yes. mostly. I tend to use it more as a kind of 'sharing' device for remembering/tracking sites that I might refer others to. i'm also using it though to keep a kind of running portfolio going which I can then embed in other profile pages or use for keeping the CV / resume up to date, see: http://www.wikieducator.org/User:BrentSimpson#Portfolio.3F which is an RSS feed from my delicious tag brentsimpson-portfolio.

1 when did you begin to use Delicous ? When it first came out...Early
2004, I think. Yahoo bought it the next year.
2 how did you find out this tools ? I think someone at Learning Times
told me about it.
3 how often do you use this ? I try out any new use I can find....I
have tried all sorts of things. Over the years there have been lots
of folks that found new ways to use it. Above all, its sort of my
private library that I can browse any time I want to. I like to put
things in Bundles now. If I think I would like to teach a class on
something in the future, or learn how to do some specific skill, I
make sure I set up a bundle for it, so I can look at all the tags that
relate, and get new ideas for ways they are common or not common to
each other. I love the tag clouds.

4 if you were asked to recomend this tool to your coworker how would
you do that ? Best way is to set them down, set up an account, show
them yours and how you make things work, show them how to search in
del.icio.us and set them free. Also make sure they sign up to be in
your network so they can take advantage of links you have already
saved.
5 how would you organise your delicous ? Like I do my shoes....I
throw them all in a box, and hope no one notices I have on one black
one and one brown one. I do use bundles, and I try real hard to be
consistent with my tagging. Once in a while when I feel compelled, I
put my tag list into alphabetical mode and see if I have conflicting
tags or tags that really mean the same thing but the tag it self is
worded differently....then you can edit one or the other so the tags
are consistent. I think this is part of the bundling process....I
dont do this near enough, so I just do a search instead, if I am
looking for something specific.

6 do you often just store things in your delicous but seldom come back
to read ? There are some programs that I run periodically that will
tell you about dead links....I dump those. I also look for
duplicates...dump those. Otherwise, I keep mine on my tool bar and
use it all the time. You can check by history, alphabet, tag, tagger,
etc. Lots of different ways to look for something. You can also
subscribe to other peoples del.icio.us list by joining their network.
Say someone you admire has an account, you subscribe to their network
and everytime they post a new link it can come into your del.icio.us.
Then you can filter the results to look just for tags that that person
added. Some times I do searches in a similar way. I am reading an
article by someone, and see that they are very well versed in a
particular subject. I put del.icio.us/(theirname or what I think they
may have called their account) and see if they have one. Then I look
at their Tag cloud and see if it is that much different than
mine....if so, I subscribe. If not, I scroll through it, check a few
of the links and add them to my favorites. Did you know you can batch
edit tags too.
7 what are the disavantage of using delicous. Its a big time
consumer. Not in a bad way, but once you get started down a yellow
brick road, you just want to keep following it, and following it,
and.....following it.....

ebob

http://del.icio.us/elderbob

Did I mention that you can now make links private so that only you can
see them. Did I mention you can send others a specific tag link?

Regarding the yellow brick road, and just following it and following
it...

Remember web surfing?
You'd just surf from item to item, fascinated by info and the yummy
world wide web?

I recently remembered the joy of random web surfing, when I installed
stumble upon.
Now, when my brain hurts, or I want a break, or I need visuals, not
text, I click my stumble upon button.
It seems folks have bookmarked lots of lovely flash animations in
stumble upon.
Some trash, of course, but I just click again.

a bit slow to reply but....

I find that I can be pretty lazy with delicious.

I am sometimes uncertain of its value vs good search skills.

Tagging is frustrating and liberating, both at once. Tagging terms are so subjective.

I tend to think I'll just find it again when I need it, using good search skills (both on google, and within the sites of interest).

If the resource no longer exists, neither google or delicious can assist (tho the Wayback Machine may be able to).

I dont mind the subjective tagging and quite often tag items with a number of names so I am always able to find them again.

What I am confused about is

1.how to use the network feature of delicious and

2. how to most effectively search on a whole tag e.g elearning. is it just delicious/elearning or is it delicious/????/elearning.

Any links, videos, resources or answers that help me learn this would be most appreciated.

Anne Paterson

I hadn't seen this video before, from the maker of one of my favorites, heavy metal umlaut.  Thanks Leigh, for tip. For links to both:
http://del.icio.us/vancestevens/jonudell

Neither Leigh's post nor Jon's screencast answer Anne's questions.

For the second:
http://del.icio.us/tag/elearning

so ??? is tag

For the first question, go to your del.icio.us acct and click on 'your network'; e.g.
http://del.icio.us/network/talo

You can see anyone in your network and there is a field with an ADD button next to it for populating your network.  I just added talo to my network.  Now if I find any links that I think members of this list might be interested in, as i tag them for me personally (and the world in general) I can add the tag 'for:talo' and the link so designated should appear at http://del.icio.us/talo (I think ... it hasn't yet ??? I thought this would be instantaneous .. anyone have an explanation?)

Anyway this does work.  Edtech Weekly is a weekly webcast that relies on people submittng links in this way.  I don't think you have to be IN their network, you just tag links for:edtechtalk and if they like them they'll feature them on the show, and of course all links submitted in this way are public.

While I'm on the subject, I think it was earlier in this thread, I've updated my Internet Search: Notekeeping and Tagging from Anywhere Online (Workbook 2008 version 1) and placed it at http://213.42.148.233/file.php/83/internetsearch/InternetSearch2008v1.pdf

I haven't revised the del.icio.us part actually but I did make many changes to the Google Notebook bit.  I'm especially curious if Leo can get the update at this location from behind the great firewall of china.  Anyone else is welcome too. (If challenged, access this document by identifying yourself to the Moodle as a Guest)

Vance

I figured out the explanation of where links go when they are directed at TALO via a 'for:talo' link from anyone's del.icio.us account.

They should go here:
http://del.icio.us/for/talo

but in order to see these, we in the mundane world have to be logged on as 'talo'

I had a look at my own settings

I went to
https://secure.del.icio.us/settings/vancestevens/people/privacy
(settings > people > network privacy)

and allowed other people to view my network

I'm not sure if this will let you in to
http://del.icio.us/for/vancestevens

Does it?

Or someone logged in as talo has to accept these new bookmarks sent to talo and then one can see them as part of
http://del.icio.us/talo
or via the tag in talo
http://del.icio.us/talo/tagnamehere

The procedure for doing that is that user talo logs in, goes to 'links for you' (see the second line of the web page), and for each of the bookmarks there clicks on save as and in the process adds suitable tags.
A sweat or what?

Vance, is it ok to use a copy of that tagging piece outside of your
environment? (If you aren't logged in, even as guest, it won't take
the person right to the file and for some of the people I work with,
they would be lost! It would sure be great to be able to direct link
to all your resources without having to step into Moodle. (Evil grin,
I can just hear Leigh rubbing his hands together in glee!)

The context is this:

Hi Nancy, and everyone,

I had a look at Knowledge Sharing, seems like an interesting project, bookmarking it.

My worksheet, which is aimed at introducing my students to Google Notebook and Del.icio.us as Internet Search tools, is also available at this URL:

http://prosites-vstevens.homestead.com/files/efi/papers/sudan2007/InternetSearch2007v4.pdf

I know that this one is not reachable from China.  I had given the Moodle address as a way around that.  However in case anyone from there wants a copy (of the recently revised work) is not able to reach the Moodle location, I have uploaded it to YouSendit.

I had to direct the file notification somewhere so I used Leo's address

Your files will be available for 7 Days.

Here is the link for the file you uploaded:

HTH,
Vance
