TALO swapmeet - its happening!

Hi Everyone,

the response to my initial  advertisement  of the 2007 TALO swapmeet  was very slow at the beginning -  we were almost on the verge of cancelling it and  just meeting down at the pub.

Thankfully,  we've had a rush of  responses  -  so it will definitely be going ahead.

I've had two responses  where the participants have said that they are having considerable difficulty  getting their  boss  to give them time release to attend  a conference that has no agenda, no  fees,  no sponsorship  and no official association with and educational institution.

So  to help  people get over  this  hurdle   I've put together the following blurb - please  feel free to improve on it as you  see fit.

TALO ( Teach and Learn Online ) is a network of people interested in all things eLearning, flexible delivery, online education, networked learning, and web 2.0.

TALO operates  beyond the  Australian Flexible Learning Framework, ( indeed its  participant list has become international )   and  its participants  often explore technologies, practices and  ideas that  have yet to take hold in the  educational  establishment.  - its a  "think-tank"  with a broad  focus on technology and  learning.

The TALO unconference is a conference  where the participants set the agenda  -  its is a small gathering where participants get to present, engage, and learn from the other participants.

Some participants have indicated that they would like to present: -

Rose Grozdanic, Peter Shanks, and the other participants in  the project  will be presenting  : a 2007 newpractices project where  competency documentation  from the NTIS is used to  automatically  create  elearning frameworks ( moodle, wiki etc) and  to also create tools that help develop learning objects related to the competency frameworks generated. ( http://tpu.bluemountains.net )
Michael coghlan will be facilitating a discussion on " Does new technologies mean new learning ? "

Peter Allen will be presenting  " ...the use of hosted websites with domain names, CMS, and other open source tools could be used by a teacher to create an online educational e-portfolio, and these skills and techniques are similar to the solution that small business would like to employ to create their own online presence"

I'm sure other  presentations/ discussions will become avialable soon.

The following is a list of unconfirmed  participants so far  :

Rose G
Robyn Jay
Alex
Botts
Graham Wegener
Liegh and Sunshine
Shaggy
Stephan Wridgeway
Alex Hayes
Peter Allen
Michael Coghlan.

Thanks Peter. That might help me get some money back...

If you like you could add me in as talking about:

Leigh Blackall - Notes from a southern New Zealand vocational training and education organisation that is attempting to use hosted internet services, social media, and creative commons licensing in staff and course development work.

I'll add it to the wiki.

I wish I could be with you f2f and enjoy all that comes with it. As this is not possible, will there be a possibility for me to see you and talk to you virtually pendant le swap meeting?
Warm regards from Brazil,
B. (some people are bothered by bees)

barbara i can't imagine a swapmeet without you - of course you'll be there. we should try get a webcam thing happening - remember how cool it was when teemu visited his daughter each day? you make sure you have a camera, we'll do the rest at our end (and yeah, i wouldn't know a cable from a cabal but there'll enough geeks at tadelaidelo to set it up for anyone who wants to beam in).

and how about some new members of talo joining us? i've heard there's over 700 of us know. introduce yourselves so that we know you when you beam in.

:-)

8 and 9 march in adelaide - some of us are continuing on until 11 march, some at the womadelaide  music festival and others somewhere else in adelaide (tho i hope most will come to womadelaide, which is a world music festival that is most conducive to social networking, bee bothering and world peace...)

I'm interested in these topics:

1) Copyright law / Intellectual Property
I've just asked Janet Hawtin if she would be interested in presenting / chatting about that and she is. Her blog is at http://lucychili.blogspot.com/

2) What is knowledge?
That seems like a basic question but my contention is that it is highly contested (both historically and currently) and that it is important to get a handle on it as part of resolving more visible questions, like, what is the future of learning? I'm willing to present on that one. More information at http://learningevolves.wikispaces.com/

3) Busting censorware with psiphon
http://psiphon.civisec.org/index.html

4) One Laptop per child / Squeak / EToys and other related topics

I currently don't know enough about (3) and (4) to present but am interested in chatting about those topic with others who are interested

thanks to the organisers: Peter A, Rose G, and Michael C

I hope Nancy White shows. I'd like to talk with her (and others) about her thoughts on facilitation. Especially of online networks.

What's the timing of this event?  I won't be in Adelaide physically but Michael Coghlan has instigated numerous online events from thereabouts involving many of our mutual online friends.  I wouldn't mind dropping by if the un-timing is right.  Maybe we could drop into second life for an un-tour.  I can hookup my un-webcam.  Un-fortunately, the exact time is at the moment, to me, un-known.

that's the beauty of unconferencing, vance - what time would you like it to be? (meaning that there's alot of flexibility for scheduling any online components).  Why don't you put something on the wiki indicating where you are (so that we're aware of your time zones etc) and when you'd like to beam yourself in. Bee you should do the same, so we know what time it is in Brazil and when you'll be hovering about.  also, if either of you are interested in running a session, say so in the wiki and propose a time/date.

have heard from nancy - the ppl who were bringing her out changed their schedules/arrangements so she won't be here, which is disappointing.

Are you going to record all that like last time and make it available on the wiki?
I´d love to take part in Michael Coghlan´s discussion.
Hope so.
B.
