I believe the Mexican Revolution disestablished the Catholic church as the state religion of Mexico. I do not believe Spain dropped Catholicism as the state religion until the end of the Franco regime.

This book specifically mentions the religious aspect of the defenders of the Alamo. http://www.amazon.com/Santa-Anna-Texas-Narrative-Revolution/dp/0890965277

der Hoaxster (derho...@gmail.com) The US deal with crooked Santa Ana combined with the US occupation of Mexico City led to the acquisition of the US southwest. The second deal involved the Gadsen purchase in which the US got part of southern New Mexico. When I lived in El Paso Texas, the Gadsen purchase seemed to be a really big event. Mesilla, New Mexico, 30 miles north of El Paso and now a suburb of Las Cruces, was built to be Mexico's border city.
