Hi everybody,

How can I combine multiple projects?

I've read that TJ can manage multiple projects (hence "Projects can be combined to larger projects" from documentation) but I think there is no detail about that subject in documentation.

any idea?

Hi Erkan

It is possible to export one scheduled project into another. I do not do that myself since I'm the only one doing the planning. I have all (sub)projects in 1 project. I break up the projects so I have one in a separate file. When a new one arrives I make a new file/subproject and include it in the master file. If my memory serves me right there was an example in the old Taskjuggler2 documentation.

Maybe this sets you on the right track.

Hope it helps,
Bas

Thanks Bas, it helped a lot...

What I'm planing to do is to create one main project and then add other projects as root tasks. I think for now it is the best solution.

Thank you again.

Thanks Heiko,

My implementations of tj3 have been fairly simplistic, but this is great advice as I my usage becomes more advanced.

Hi Erkan,
just an additional hint for the practial usage of tj in a multiple projects environment.
I use the powerful macro tool to make the definition and maintenance of resources and task/projects much easier.

For example staff resources are practically defined by a few parameters such as name, rate, emai, and even many more details. If you have a macro defined which takes these parameters into the right place of the tj-command then you can handle even  hundreds of people by using a spreadsheet with these basic informations and export it into a file.
I myself use additional (hidden) columns with the selfdefined tj-macro command details so that the export into a simple tji.file generates directly the source for the tj-projects definition which can be . Beside other resouces such as equipment derived from an inventory you usually can reduce even tasks and subtasks to certain parameters which completely describe their true variances. These parameters can be used to generate the task-lists of multiple projects without stepping all the time into the very flexible but difficult to read tj-syntax. Updates of the informations can be handled the same way.
 Best
Heiko
