I wonder if anyone's thought of this - I find it slightly annoying
that my perfectly good computer is sitting in front of me blinking
while I fuss with getting my Tasker profiles set up. Is there a way,
perhaps, to write some kind of computer program that mirrors the
Tasker app - and then the profiles we build with this could get sent
to the phone? I feel like writing profiles would go way faster if I
used the computer I already use for programming.

Hmm..

I intend to publish the specification of the data file (which would
enable
this) at some point, but havn't had time.

Could this be done on SDK emulator? Install the app in emulator,
restore the backup from the SD, make mods to profiles and tasks,
backup, send backup to phone, restore that backup.

Hmm, that's an interesting idea. I'll give that a try sometime this
weekend. Your thoughts, Pent? The problem I see with this is Tasker
will expire at some point, and it could be a hassle to get it back. So
I don't think it's a long term option..

Personally it moves like a snail in my emulator and is harder to
use, but if it works for you...

You can just delete and reinstall.

You could always *hand* edit the profiles, I use Notbook++ to
rearrange some profiles because my task list is getting upto 20 odd
commands all within nested loops and you just cannot edit that profile
on a small N1 screen..

Keyboard can get in the way sometimes, so might pick the simplest one
possible, and it's not SUPER fast, but it's not bad, and faster than
doing a lot of hand-entering. :)

The problem with this is that it would only cover standard Tasker
functions - If you want to use a plugin, it won't appear in your
Computer GUI program. Also, a restriction of doing this through a
computer based program is that you will be unable to test your tasks
until you load them into your Tasker install on your Andro

True, but my main idea was to just write profiles quickly and get them
onto the phone. I can deal with the lack of plugin functionality.

actually, I'd really like some text-based language of sorts. If I had
the xml or whatever way each profile action is stored, I could
conceivably write an interpreter that translates some hand written
(ie text based) code into an importable Tasker profile. I could do
this with Perl, say. SL4A supports Perl for Android, so I could write
a Tasker profile that detects this code when it's on the user's phone,
then run the interpreter on it.
