Decided to turn it into a beta since so many changes...

Cpt, let me know if you're still getting those crash-on-exits.

ding ding ding, we have a winner :)

btw. what a huge list of changes..

it seems that:
scene edit: light theme with dark scene background, control buttons weren't visible
didn't make it through when selecting Move or Resize.. then the controls are "invisible" again

also, been making some changes to several Tasks and Scenes and no crash so far upon exit..
looking good!

Always surprises me too :-)

Several were hangovers from the new UI.

Awesome, will test it out and see. Would be nice to avoid having a minor heart attack over the fear of losing my changes every time I exit xD

noticed in the last 2 betas that a few variables are appearing twice in the variables list, and holding the same data. May not be related to the betas.

only thing I can connect is that I added the variables first in a Scene, then went back to the task to insert the coding.

Havent crashed on exit yet today, which is promising, since it's been a busy day with two manual force closes to reset memory leak

I installed Tasker 4.1b1m and am still seeing the memory usage increase over time. It starts at around 20mb and is now at 70mb. I have created a profile to log the memory data every 5 minutes in hopes that it will aid in identifying the cause of the increasing memory usage.

I have a Tasker log file (Log to SDcard) and memory usage data files with date & time stamps.
A zip file containing the log files is available here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kbecqn9zg4ez9mr/Tasker%20logs.zip

My phone is a Motorola Droid RAZR HD (XT-926)
OS version 4.1.2 stock - rooted

Looking at the mem_used.txt file I see that the memory usage stays relatively constant when Tasker is running in the background or should I say when I am not actively using the Tasker interface.

The profile below was used to generate the memory usage logs.
Data is collected every 5 minutes.
The meminfo.txt file is a dumpsys of meminfo with data.time stamps added.
The mem_used.txt file pulls only the value for the TOTAL of Private Dirty with a date.time stamps.

I am hoping that you will find using the mem_used.txt file in conjunction with the Tasker log file, you can indentify where the problem might be more easily.

Please let me know if a change in how or what I am recording can be improved - or if I am wasting my time.

The memory data was collected using the following Profile.

Profile: Mem Info (34)
Time: From 00:00 every 5m Till 23:59

I'm seeing the same thing with regard to array elements.  Elements referenced using a variable index (the index is a variable) are all listed under the appropriate project (and not in the default/home project), but those that are also referenced by name (i.e. %Array1 or %Array(1) - I tried both) are shown twice.

Using this version but not sure if it's a bug/limitation or I am doing something wrong. Contact thumbnail (content://com...../photo) as an icon for notification is not working. It defaults to tasker icon. It works in the scene though when used as a image. Am I doing something wrong? Same profile was working fine earlier but don't remember since when it's broken. I think after this update only.

Since you can't set a thumbnail icon directly (it's not shown as an
option),
I guess you used the direct-entry possibility.

In any case, thumbnails cannot be displayed as notification icons,
Android doesn't allow it.

I can't explain how you managed to make it work previously.

That's strange. It worked before. Is it not supported since jelly bean or ICS? I created this profile long back (on ICS) and it was working fine. I have been flashing Jelly bean ROMs recently.

And by the way, this is how I used it.

- Action 'Test' with 'Contact Thumb URI' of the number into variable %contactpic

- Action notify with icon as %contactpic

Thanks,

Rajendra

It's never been supported, Android has only ever supported
notification icons
from an app APK. Perhaps you are mixed up with another action ?

Probably it has not been officially supported, by i have been doing the same thing on pre 4.0 version of tasker, i was able to set an app icon (any installed app) as a notification icon, this way i could just export my project as an app using a custom icon, then setting the icon of my app as a notification icon and bam it worked. However, now it does not anymore and i have to use a built in icon for the notification.

More out of curiosity more than anything else, since I wanted to use images in one of my projects. How does contacts, missed calls, WhatsApp and the like do it?

It might have worked in an exported app, because the icons are
converted to 'builtin' during the export process.

Perhaps they use their own notification layout, then you can set an
icon
from anywhere.

But can't we have an option to have for example an assets folder in lets say /sdcard/tasker/projectname/ where we can put graphics and other stuff to bundle with the app that we can use then? I have no idea on how it exactly it can be done, but it would be nice to have. ;-)

Thanks, I had wondered, especially as I saw that the Design docs
endorse using a separate image:

http://developer.android.com/design/patterns/notifications.html

http://developer.android.com/reference/android/support/v4/app/NotificationCompat.Builder.html#setLargeIcon%28android.graphics.Bitmap%29

It would appear it was a case of false advertising, I'd assume the
various apps using this are converting the image to a bitmap on the
fly at the very least. Thanks for taking the time to clarify this
Pent.

You can use a anywhere-sourced bitmap for the JB 'large icon', yes.

specifically makes it into Tasker one day.

Hi!

Never received feedback about my issue posted in the old "4.0u2" thread. As I experience the same problem in 4.0b1, I repost it below just in case it wasn't noticed before.

Thanks for your awesome work with Tasker!

Regards
Christofer

Hi there,

I'm pretty new to Tasker, so I hope this isn't just a simple a user error. Have looked for similar topics but haven't seen any.

I experience this in both the released 4.0u1 (Google play) and the 4.0u2 beta. The phone is a Galaxy Nexus with stock Android 4.2.2. Happens during Tasker managed tasks and in apps exported with App Factory.

The problem: When I use "Variable Query" to get user input, the input window sometimes just flash one time on the screen as a black square for a very short time and then disappear. When this happens it will skip to the next action in the task list. Sometimes the black square will stay on screen instead of a quick flash. See screenshot: http://x.0p.se/ccU9

I can't seem to find a pattern in this problem. I set up a test task containing 10 numbered "Variable Query" to see what would happen. Sometimes it skipped a few actions (I saw both the flashing square and the staying square), sometimes it went through the list flawlessly.

I hope my description of the problem isn't too fuzzy to understand... Is this a known problem, or maybe a simple user error after all?

So I wasn't sure if I should start a new topic for this, as it is beta related. But another app that I use, AOKPush, just started a beta testing Community on G+ and as part of it, you can opt into getting the beta updates to the app through the Play Store, and can opt out of them at any time as well. Not sure if you are aware of it, but it would be a pretty simple way to distribute the Tasker Betas to those interested. Still happy to sideload otherwise, but I like the idea and thought I should share.

It's just a symptom of the fact that there's no memory left for the
app.

It sounds like a timing issue.

I'm going to be working on scenes once I've released an update to deal

Havent had a single crash. Been close several times, and I know for a hard learned fact that it would have crashed in those cashes on previous occasions. Once Tasker starts poking its head above 50MB of RAM, it starts using 5+ seconds to exit

Wietse van Buitenen

unread,

I also didn't experience a crash upon exit although I did see an OOM toast and when I opened Tasker I got a "warning: writeDevice: oom"..
this resulted in the changes I made previously not being saved..
so the result is the same as when it crashed (loss of data) only that it happens more gracefully now..

Make sure you download the beta version that is specific for those who purchase through the playstore.  Also, make sure you have Unknown Sources checked in your phone's settings so you can install *.apk files instead of things that are just directly installed via playstore.

I had a look at this for the next update. Seems to be a timing issue
in Android that occurs sometimes if you show an activity too soon
after showing it the previous time. At least, if I waited a second in
the code before showing the next Variable Query it never occurred.

I will put some sort of 'if it's been less than x time since you last
showed a dialog scene, wait till it's been x time'. I'm going to try
and minimize x, but it's probably going to differ per device, so let
me know if it's still happening for you after the next update.

Yesterday I noticed that I cannot change my Display Brightness with Tasker anymore. Maybe it's because of this new version? I also installed the Lux plugin so that could also be it but when I disable the plugin it still doesn't work.

When I change %BRIGHT with Tasker, the scroll bar in the notification area changes, but the Display Brightness itself does not change. I have enabled the option Immediate Effect. Only after I turn the Display off and on the Display Brightness changes.

I have a lot of small questions like this, maybe it's possible to add a sticky topic for small questions?
