Here's your daily beta update:

Excellent now that i got it up and running I do have a couple issues all involve Task Widgets.

for clarity sake this all happens when i long press the home screen and add a Task Widget from there.

1. Task widgets don't work - I set them on the home screen and the when i click them nothing happens.

2. Confusing when selecting the Task - After you select the task Widget it shows the actual task with a rocket ship icon in the bottom left corner, It is VERY UNCLEAR what that button does and i basically wiped out my task and had to recreate it when i pressed it. Also in order to actually use the task you have to push the Tasker icon at the top. This is very confusing while the Back to save and exit is something that i can get used to in the rest of Tasker, I don't think it is the best solution when selecting a task for a widget i would suggest replacing the rocket icon (i have no idea what the point of that button is) with the a check mark that actually selects the Task to use as the widget.

3. Widget look bad - I downloaded the Green Orb HD Icon pack and it works perfectly with the previous version of Tasker, but now the icons don't resize and are bigger than the size of a standard icon, also the text which shows the Widget name is right justified instead of centered. Acreen shots attached to show the difference. The 2 widgets are green orbs in the center of the screen.

Let me know if you need anything else.

I have just had a play assigning other app shourtcuts to power toggles and they all work fine apart from tasker and secure settings shourtcuts. I asume the secure settings one isnt working because it requires you to select an icon from tasker or an ipack to save the shortcut.

Maybe the issue is something to do with how tasker assigns icons to the taskcuts.

Which Android version do you have, Wes ? I thought that greyed oval
background to the app text was gone by ICS.

I could reproduce widgets not working, thanks for mentioning.

Ok i'm having another weird issue.

If you have a project with enough profiles in it that you have to scroll, if you scroll up and down, it seems that some of the profiles that are scrolled off screen are getting turned off, you'll see the switch being moved to "off" position and if you scroll it could get re-enabled again.

It seems random which profiles get disabled and if you continually scroll up and down you'll see random profiles getting disabled and re-enabled.

Has anyone else seen this?

I install this new beta (over last official version, non betas with the new ui) > get to main screen > accept dialog > do a flick scroll to the bottom of the list

Scrolling is kinda of "stutery"

I get back up in the same way > Random profiles get enabled/disabled

I keep repeating this, more mayhem.

I reported this in b3, albeit, with totally different wording, dunno if i'm making more sense now.

If not, i will make a video later

I was easily able to reproduce this on my Galaxy Nexus (4.2.1), but only on the first project in which I scrolled. After selecting a different project tab I was unable to duplicate the problem.

I then wanted to exit Tasker without saving my changes, but couldn't see how to do so in the new UI.

Tasker error popups are unreadable on my phone. I thought it was just a dark box, until I got a screenshot where I could barely make out the text. The Tasker theme was defaulted to "Light".

Also, I'm assuming you know that there's no website for the Tasker 4 version user guide.

The Task edit screen is a little confusing. If I add an action, it's not clear that you just hit back (via back button or the logo) to save your changes. Can you make the logo button display text like "Save and go back" if you long-tap it?

Haven't spent a lot of time with this new beta, but overall feels pretty good!

It seems to depend on the sort mode - it happens when I have sorting set to User, but not happens on another profile with "Active, alphabetic" sorting.

I then wanted to exit Tasker without saving my changes, but couldn't see how to do so in the new UI.

Click "x" in the action bar (or whatever the name is - at the top basically) - that's how you "cancel" in any other window now :)

I just followed the design guidelines for the icon meaning 'save and

I've noticed the same bugs re profiles turning on and off randomly when scrolling.  Also had bug where turning one profile on turns another off.  Also sometimes a profile will disable/enable itself a couple seconds after being enabled/disabled.

Also had a thought re design of profile lists - now that the on/off is more intuitively slid from one to the other, rather than tapped, it is really easy to move profiles around accidentally. Maybe make it need a long-press in order to move?

Think I found another possible bug to do with profiles enabling/disabling correctly.  Had a profile with context "Wifi Connected" (and nothing else).  When wifi was connected and profile on, profile was activated.  However, when the profile was turned off, the profile did not disable, but stayed active.  It only disabled once wifi was disconnected.

Tasker main activity window does not behave in the same way as other apps when opening the app. On slower devices (like mine), there is an akward moment before the main app window is loaded, when there is nothing displayed.
Other apps (tried contacts, sms, email..) opens a window with only the action bar/title bar and a blank, white "content" until everything is loaded, but when I open Tasker (e.g. when switching between open apps) I get "nothing" displayed (i.e. homescreen with the status bar etc) after which the complete Tasker window is shown.

Any chance for changing this behaviour?

I don't have lag like that when opening Tasker on a Galaxy Nexus, so it does sound like a device speed issue. A simple window like you describe sounds like a good idea in that case.

But when I click Home button to close Tasker, my home screen apps and widgets show up on top of Tasker for a second, before my wallpaper shows up. Is anyone else seeing this behavior? I also updated to CM 10.1M1, but no other app is doing this.

I also just found if I click the "recent apps" button, then click it again, it doesn't go back to Tasker as expected but instead goes back to my home screen.

Sorry about that, turned out to be a result of making the switches
respond to being slid on or off. Took me a few hours to find and fix,
grrrr.

Can't upload a new version because my ISP someone lost that option

I tried, it's like the home button, can't be intercepted any more by
the app. Just shows Google Now. Perhaps via the Android search

I'll see if it interacts OK via the search intent or manager.

It's a consequence of the ability to dynamically set the theme.

I load first with no display because otherwise Android loads the
default theme, then when I set the theme in the app it loads that,
resulting in much slower startup.

The display delay is probably noticeable because you have tonnes of
data as well as a slow device.

I guess this will ameliorate with time.

Yes, sorry, got my uploads out of order.

beta: bugfix: widgets were not clickable and widget icons were
badly sized
beta: bugfix: various oddities around profile enable switches
beta: bugfix: global enable/disable wasn't correctly locked when
lock code set
beta: change: Prefs: moved Defaults action bar item to overflow
menu
removed: 'create from app' button in widget/shortcut configure
screen, was just confusing people

Not much in the list today because those cursed enable switches in the
profile list took up my whole afternoon.

Ok downloaded it and it did fix the enable switch issue, good work.

Now the Widgets actually work and while the icon resizing has improved it still isn't quite right. and the title text seems to go right justified when the name is longer than one line. I found that they look exactly the same when i use the default launcher as well as LauncherPro.

Wih regards to the shortcut issue (not sticking) and the task icon issue (repeat source select screen) I was having. I have experimented further.

in power toggles if i select a tasker shortcut and use the icon that is already assigned to the task then the shortcut doesnt stick

If i try it again but opt to choose another icon in the taskcut task screen (local media), once i select the icon i get the error:-
"error, data blocked, please return to the main app and exit via the main screen"

now everytime I select taskcut I just get the error and kicked out until I return to tasker and exit again.

If i try it again but opt to choose another icon in the taskcut task screen (built in icon) I, dont get any error but the shortcut doesnt stick still

The two issues I reported definatley seem related.

I relation to this. the apps where the shortcuts worked (nova launcher & notification widget), these apps dont take the icon provided by the task, but instead use taskers launcher icon by default.

From all evidence, its definatley something to do with the way tasker assigns the icon and hands it to the calling app.

1) When editing an action/state/anything, after pressing the "reload" button (the one that shows other actions/states) and back to cancel the change, any changes made in the action/state are gone and it is at its default state.

2) Torch action - why don't you remove it? As far as I remember, it no longer works on ICS+, so it's not possible that it will show up on any phone, in Tasker 4.0+, right?
If you intend to keep it, you can remove the <i> from the warning message that pops up after clicking it.

Nice to see the beta coming along so quick! I've just noticed a bug in b5 (it could have been in b4/3 aswell? but I didn't notice it) that I don't think anyone else has posted about so far.
When dragging actions up/down in a task they don't end up in the right place. I haven't been able to establish a reliable pattern yet, every time I try and reproduce more than a couple times it seems to bug in a different way.

When dragging actions down one place, about half the time they swap as they should, but the other half the action moving ends up one spot above.  Eg. action 4 to 3 instead of 4 to 5.  Dragging actions more than one place down is harder to pin down, but pretty much never ends up in the right place.

The only reliable reproduction I've managed is in tasks with 10 or more actions, it's pretty weird. Dragging any action from 9-10 / 10-11 / 11-12 ends up with that action in spots 4 or 5 or 6 (I think it depends on exactly how many actions are in the task.  However, regardless of the number of actions, if you drag the 2nd to last action into the last spot, it ends up at number 7.  Very odd.

Also in tasks where there are enough actions where you have to scroll, it becomes more random.  Sometimes it will move up, sometimes down by 1 or 4 places, (when you've tried to move it 10), and sometimes it won't move at all. I think it might have something to do with the 'scrolling' area - where you drag the action down far enough to start scrolling and somehow that stops the action moving and instead drops it there, even though it looks as if it continues as normal.

I should also mention that it seems to only be with moving actions down the task list. Moving them up is pretty reliable.

Maybe I'll get round to investigating one day, in the meantime the

Yes, I suspect it's related to the 'no display' speedup I mentioned.
Perhaps I can find a simple default theme for the manifest that
prevents it.

Curses, I managed to reproduce it once, then when I went to look at
the code and tried again I can't anymore.

I can't even see *why* it would happen: I'm not setting the background
of the label, it should be transparent. Will try setting it
transparent explicitly for both light and dark.

Maybe labels are black exactly because they are transparent? What lies under them? Black hole? ;)

After spending some time creating/modifying profiles/tasks, using the logo button for "save and go back" in Tasker is starting to feel natural. To the point where I'm tapping the logo on the main screen, and waiting for it to exit Tasker. D'oh! :)

The Task edit screen is a little confusing. If I add an action, it's not clear that you just hit back (via back button or the logo) to save your changes. Can you make the logo button display text like "Save and go back" if you long-tap it?

That's 2 plus me is 3 that want it to save and exit :-)

Why not make it a global preference in Tasker, and leave it to the users?  And have option default to how Pent wants it. :)

I'm getting used to it now, however one thing that bugs me is that the cancel button is on the main screen (the exit without saving button) but the "Save and Exit" option is in the menu, seems to me it should be reversed.

But putting the "Save and Exit" button as the icon would also fix this issue. So my vote is yes.

Thanks, it works. It'd be even cooler though if it could behave similarily to built-in apps, i.e. until the window is loaded, the "stub" window is shown that looks like the app, but without the content, i.e. only the action bar with the app icon is shown :)

Guidelines are not rules. Do what seems to make the most sense for your application. It's annoying that some people seem to think the UI needs to change every time Google blinks.

BTW, I like the new look, even though I need to learn a few things again. What would we do in life if we didn't need to deal with change.

Your daily beta release b6 is up:

I reported a similar issue, but it might not be the same root cause for both of them:
1) in a task, with one action, if I hit the drag area (avoiding slide), I end up with editing the action (that's not new), but when I exit, instead of the "+" key, "thrash" icon is shown. However, if I press it, it opens the new action selector

2) cosmetic: can you change the color of the marker in the calendar context selector? At the moment it's orange that does not seem to suit anything other in the UI.

The problem is, you have to specify a theme in the manifest. That's
what's shown before the dynamic call to set the theme in the app takes
place.

If I specify a dark theme in the manifest, then the screen goes
completely black and then completely white if you have a light theme
selected in prefs , which isn't very pleasant.
And vice versa.

I could do some clever stuff and have launchable activities in the
manifest with different fixed initial themes, which I enable and
disable dependent on the user-selected theme.

It works in the default browser, but I have a suspicion it will cause
problems in 3rd Party launchers.

So I can't event show a 'loading' theme with an action bar, because it
has to be fixed, and the AB could be light or dark dependent on the
user theme.

In other words, it's a price we're paying for theme flexibility.

Using the icon as a "save and exit" button I think will feel natural to frequent users, but as a new Tasker user I don't think I would expect it to do that.

Maybe wrap it into the Beginner mode preference? If you uncheck beginner mode, the icon becomes "save and exit"? Can I vote for that?

Mine's all locked up.  I tried hitting the phone's back button from within a task and nothing happened.  So I exited with the home button.  Now when I go back in I can't open any tasks, or really do anything.  SG3 rooted.

Reboot helped but I can reproduce it but trying to pick an icon from .ico/subdirectory.  When I exit it locks up.  Menu bar at top works, so does profile bar at bottom.  Just can't open tasks, or settings menu.  Wait!  Just got an error - "Tasker isn't responding.  Do you want to close it?"   Picking yes fixes it.

I had exactly the same issue, twice, and it was also icon-related, i.e. I tried changing icons in a notification action and in a task I guess. I did not select any special/custom icon folders though - just the built-in ones. I tried to reproduce the issue but did not manage to.

I agree with this! Make the tasker icon the project selector! Then you won't have a half-cut-off project title at the bottom right of the screen. Instead you could have the static profiles/tasks/scenes/vars!

Clone in the Scene Options still doesn't work in b6.

And I'd like to have icon size options when create widget. Sometimes big icons (like in b3) with no widget labels look better. See the attatched screenshots.

Hi Pent,

Just discovered the new beta and tried it out this morning. Looks good!
Here are two bug reports from my short time testing.

1. In Scene editor screen, status bar is not hiding when editing scene, even though hide status bar is ticked in preferences. The top and bottom bars overlay the resize buttons in the scene editor making it impossible to resize scene objects.

2. Icons in the "Set Widget Icon" actions are only sometimes working. I am finding that the widget task's own icon keeps overriding the icon set by "Set Widget Icon"

3. When upgrading from 1.3.4 to 4.0b beta, all icons from the built-in tasker set of icons are updated to the dark grey ICS icons which are impossible to see and is an absolute pain in the butt to go through all my tasks to fix them all to the lighter coloured version also in the new built-in set. Can you fix this so that when upgrading from 1.3.4 or earlier versions that the new icons in the built-in set default to the light coloured icon range rather than the dark grey?!

Thank you again Pent.

This is b6, right ?

By 'when I exit' you mean 'after clicking an icon in the selector
dialog' ? Does the icon show in the bottom bar ?

I think there's a timing or memory issue there somewhere, I also had a
lock at some point but couldn't reproduce.

Could you send me a system log when it locks up ?

Sorry, I won't be doing more than the bare basics for widgets right
now. This is a UI update, not a widget update.

At some point I'd like to make widgets configurable to some degree,
but not now.

You can change the UI theme to change the icon set (for project and
task icons).

I chose dark grey for default because it matches with the default
light theme for the UI.

Then they would be invisible in the UI...

I tested with builtin icons without problem. At what point are they
'overridden' ?

Is it for particular types of icons ?

I think a drop down menu next to the icon would be good as a projects tab. I think ultimatley the lack of a true action bar has let the UI update down. it would have been perfect for multiselecting actions/tasks/profiles for cloning/deleting etc. (like the default e-mail app). But I understand the huge amounts of time and effort Pent has put into it and It looks the part.

As for the save and exit idea for the icon on the main screen, Its correct as it is. look at the default gallery/e-mail apps etc. this is exactly how they work also, its just going to take you a bit of time to get used to the new layout.

Hi Pent. Just to confirm, when selecting local media for Icons now, it sets correctly instead of prompting to select the source again. however, If i flick through a few tasks one after the other selecting new icons from taskers builtin ones, every couple of times, the icon list locks up and lags like a memory leak or somthing.

Selecting taskuts through other apps still fails with the majority.

Also I cant edit any of my scene actions. it just clears the title of the element so it wont save.

I have a widget called Power Menu which allows me quick access to various tasks such as "Car Mode Start", "Night Mode", "Data On", etc...
I also set it to change the icon depending on whether I have the phone plugged into charger, usb or not charging. The default widget task icon was a dark grey battery (I didn't change it yet) and the "Set Widget Icon" tasks set them to light grey plug/battery/usb icon however after it does that it appears to revert back to the widget task's origninal dark grey icon
