Idle timer?

Hi all!

I'm looking for a way to automatically dim the screen (I have an HTC
Hero) when certain conditions are met, e.g.: when the phone is face up
on a flat surface and no touchscreen or key activity has been detected
for 1 minute. I can't seem to find anything in the documentation
about an idle timer. This would be the same timer that the Android
lock screen would normally use. Ultimately, I want behaviour where
the phone's screen will dim to the lowest setting after a short idle
timeout (e.g., 1 minute), then turn off and lock after a longer idle
timeout (e.g., 5 minutes). If the phone is picked up (or other
movement is detected) between the short and long timeouts, the screen
brightness is restored, and both idle timers are reset.

Is this possible with Takser?

No, sorry, Android doesn't provide access to an activity timer.

Actually I'm going to put in a feature request for that, stay tuned.

Thanks for the quick reply! Would it be possible to watch for
activity instead then, and have Tasker run its own timer? Or maybe
watch for some other event that is tied to the activity timer (like
the screen dimming or locking), and react to that?

This is something that I would be interested in, and surely there are
many out there that could make use of such a set of features.
In my case, I am trying to find a set of conditions that could
reliably and automatically put my phone into "sleep mode" (basically
just turn off the ringer for now), and bring it out when I get up.
Since my hours vary, I can't set it to a regular time every night. So
far I'm making use of the light level, the phone orientation, and the
proximity sensor, though I don't think that this set up is good
enough. My phone could be face down in my pocket and the ringer could
turn off without my knowledge during the day.
I think timers could make things a lot easier.

Thanks.
