Couldn't find the thread.

For those whom it concerns: I'm not ignoring this problem and will
look at it when time allows.

I think the most hopeful solution is going to be some kind of
disabling of configured networks perhaps via an action (which would be
useful for other purposes too).

Could someone give a precise paragraph describing the problem ?

Is it connecting to known configured networks or random open networks
that happen to be around ?

Thanks,

Pent

As Calvin wrote: the issue is when you're connected via 3g with wifi
turned off and have a "known network" available. Then, whenever a scan
is performed, a Wifi connection is setup for couple of seconds,
interrupting the 3g connection of course.

As far as I know, Android does not connect on its own to unknown
networks.

BTW Pent,
if you get into the Wifi Near business, please remember about this bug
I reported some time ago: http://groups.google.com/group/tasker/browse_frm/thread/32c84fb84ce4460f/868232c95d0d75e9

Agreed, Calvin's write-up is excellent and describes my situation as
does your synopsis, BossMan. Disabling of configured networks would be
an acceptable way of dealing with this as far as I'm concerned.

BTW, I had a look at the Android issue tracker and couldn't find
anything about this particular behavior. I just did some basic
searching, though, looking for the words wifi and scan. I came up with
26 issues, none of which look anything like the behavior we see.

I was using locale before this, and they had the same issue, the
problem is tasker turns on wifi to scan for location, while the wifi
is on, android connects to any network you have connected to in the
past if one happens to be around. This make your 3g turn off, then
tasker turns off the wifi because the location scan is over. You have
no data for a second or two till 3g kicks back in. Locale was able to
fix this issue, but I much prefer tasker.

I finally found a way around my particular issue. WiFi Manager (http://
www.appbrain.com/app/org.kman.WifiManager) can disable SSIDs which
means I don't connect but I still have my settings for it. When I want
to connect, I go restart the app and enable. It's a bit cumbersome but
the developer is very responsive and is actually interested in Tasker
and is considering how to hook up the enable/disable function as a
plugin. Until someone can figure out how Android handles wifi scan-
only mode, I think that may be the best we can hope for.

I don't know about everyone else's issue, but if I only have one wifi
as "remembered" there is no issue. Having more than 1 would cause
tasker to become confused.

All my remembered WiFi APs have disappeared from the WiFi settings
page.

If I turn on WiFi, it will attempt to scan, and then ~ 30s later WiFi
will turn off e.g. faster than you can enter the AP details.

I also have the WiFi Analyser app, and it sees nothing.

I've gone to the extent of unistalling Tasker, rebooting my NexusOne,
and still WiFi timesout in < 30s.

This is a deal breaker!!!

Hope that helps.

The issue isn't that Tasker becomes confused (or not), the issue is
that when Tasker turns Wifi on for a scan, Android will connect to a
known network if one is available, not knowing that Tasker may turn
Wifi off very soon (unless you have a Wifi On action as part of your
profile). In this situation, when Tasker turns off Wifi, the
transition back to mobile data is not immediate, leaving you with NO
DATA connection for a short time.

The same thing would happen if you manually turned on Wifi and then
turned it off again after a connection had been made.

In the event that you have a single known network, you're likely
turning Wifi on in conjunction with Wifi Near, so this issue doesn't
arise.

Pent,

not to bug you, but that old problem reported here http://goo.gl/BQCH
(can't reply there, the thread is too old) is still alive (just sent
you a new log showing it).

Hey all - new to Tasker and trying to set up some things. One thing I
would like is, when my dinc connects to a known wifi network, it would
automatically turn off 3g/data.

I am struggling to understand Tasker - can anyone help with this?

Thanks in advance...

Mobile Data should automatically be turned off by Android when
connected to Wifi. Is it not doing that for you?

I don't know if it helps, but in Locale I noticed the 'WiFi' button on
the power widget only lit half green when scanning, and it never
connected. I too have WiFi networks around that I don't always want
to connect to (like work) and would prefer my mobile network be
preferenced (counter intuitive I know but I have a lot of personal
stuff going through the phone that I don't always want going through
the work network).

WiFi Manager sounds like a good temporary solution. I'd imagine if
WiFi Manager can do it, then there must be an API somewhere that a
plug-in could use to disasble and re-enable networks and APNs?
