We tend by a secret law of the soul to move toward our mental image of God. This is true not only of the individual Christian, but of the company of Christians that composes the Church. Always the most revealing thing about the Church is her idea of God, just as her most significant message is what she says about Him or leaves unsaid, for her silence is often more eloquent than her speech. In the News
This Monday will be the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, an event most observers at the time thought they'd never see in their lifetime. The Wall, which separated East Berlin from the rest of the city, was the most visible symbol of the "Iron Curtain," the ideological barrier and physical boundaries that had divided Europe into two blocs, one Communist and one free.
The anniversary will be marked by celebrations in several locations. On more than a mile of the ground where the Wall itself had stood, gigantic dominos have been set up. As part of the anniversary observance, the first of these will be pushed over, causing the whole line to fall, one after another. "We want to knock over the Wall once again," said Klaus Wowereit, current mayor of reunited Berlin.
Entertainers, including U2, Bon Jovi, David Hasselhoff and others will give performances at the on-site celebration. Hasselhoff is one of several performers who sang at the initial celebration of the Wall's demise, back in 1989.
Off-site observances of the anniversary include the placing of 30 linear feet of the actual Wall on the lawn across from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In another California location, Simi Valley, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library has set up a replica of a section of the Wall on which visitors can scrawl messages of peace, just as East and West Germans did on the original Wall. In 1987, while president, Reagan had called on the Soviets to remove the wall, declaring publicly, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this Wall."
There will also be an observance in Washington headlined by Defense Secretary Robert Gates.
The events behind the erecting of the Wall included the 1945 Yalta Agreement at the end of World War II, which divided Germany into four administrative sectors or zones of occupation --American, British, French and Soviet zones. Berlin was deep inside the Soviet zone, but it, too, was divided into four zones on the same plan as the rest of Germany. As the Soviets forced a repressive way of life in their zones and eliminated political freedom, many people in those areas fled to the West, including some of the brightest and best of the population. Alarmed by this "brain drain," the Soviet-dominated East German government erected the Wall in 1961. It was about 26 miles long where it cut through the center of Berlin and more than 68 miles long where it divided West Berlin from East Germany. It separated families and friends who happened to live on opposite sides of this border, and severely limited freedom of movement.
Most people viewed the Wall as an ominous development. It was heavily patrolled, and although there were several escape attempts over the years that it stood, few succeeded.
The removal of the Wall was not an isolated event. It was part of a string of liberation efforts in Soviet Bloc countries, especially Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Romania. As Andrew Nagorski put it in Newsweek, "In effect, several metaphorical walls crumbled in 1989." But as an actual structure, the Wall was the most visible symbol of Communism and of the Soviet empire, and thus its collapse was highly significant of the fate of that ideology and state.
The churches of East Germany also contributed to the removal of the Wall. During the repressive years, the churches were often the only places where people could congregate and dissent against the regime without ending up in jail. According to Brigitte Downey, who, as an associate producer with the BBC, was in Berlin when the Wall fell 20 years ago, "... the protest movement within the East German churches in Leipzig and Berlin ... contributed to the peaceful fall of the Wall. ... plus perestroika and the economic collapse." (Perestroika was the restructuring of the Soviet economy and bureaucracy that began in the mid-1980s.)

The Big Questions
1. Christianity is not identical to political freedom, but are there aspects of Christianity that make it supportive of political freedom? If so, what aspects?
2. Most Christians viewed Communism as a threat to humankind. Why?
3. The removal of the Berlin Wall and the changes it symbolized seemed at the time to make the world a safer place. Subsequently, however, new threats have arisen and humankind seems as divided as ever. What does that suggest about the nature of human interactions on a global platform? What does it suggest for Christian's who work for peace?
4. What "walls" should today's churches be trying to pull down? Why?
5. What personal "walls" do you need to deconstruct? Why?
Confronting the News with Scripture Here are some Bible verses to guide your discussion:
Joshua 6:5 "When they make a long blast with the ram's horn, as soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and all the people shall charge straight ahead." (For context, read 6:1-20.)
Unlike the Berlin Wall, the wall around Jericho was not to keep people in, but to keep others out, and, unlike the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of the Jericho wall was not a peaceful event. But the fall of the Jericho wall did allow God's provision for the people of Israel to go forward.
Questions: Can anything similar be said about the fall of the Berlin Wall? In what ways did it allow God's provision for the church to go forward?
Psalm 18:29 "... by my God I can leap over a wall." (For context, read 18:20-30.)
Psalm 18 is a song of thanks to God for victory in a military conflict, and in that context, the line quoted above probably meant "God helps me to overcome the enemy's defenses." But there is merit in reading it more broadly, as a testimony that with God, the barriers of mistrust, misunderstanding, bias, indifference and similar things that divide us from others can be breached.
Question: What "walls" has God helped you to leap over?
Isaiah 11:9 "They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea." (For context, read 11:6-9.)
This is part of Isaiah's vision of the peaceful kingdom to come in a future time when God's rule is embraced by all. No walls of any kind will be needed because "They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain ...."
Questions: Does this prophecy from Isaiah help your faith? If so, how? If not, why not?
1 Corinthians 1:27 "God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong." (For context, read 1:18-31.)
Ironically, what brought down the Iron Curtain was not military might, but the actions of people living behind the Curtain who were emboldened to challenge the Communist system, and churches helped spur that dissent. The marginalized churches, with no authority and no status, became the agent for change that helped bring Communism and the bureaucracy it spawned to an end. How well that illustrates the truth in the verse above!
Question: In what other circumstance have you seen what is weak confound what is strong?
Revelation 21:25 "Its gates will never be shut by day -- and there will be no night there." (For context, read 21:9-27.)
If you read all of the verses in the Bible pertaining to walls, you will find that most of the time, they are viewed as a good thing. Sometimes they symbolize protection and other times they are the mark of a city or nation getting back on its feet (as when Nehemiah led the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem). But it is significant that in the Bible's final mention of walls, in the vision of the "new Jerusalem," they function to keep people neither in nor out, for their gates are never shut by day, and since there is no night there, they are never shut at all. The walls seem to function only to mark the boundaries of the city.
Though the gates are wide open, what's carried in is "the glory and the honor of the nations" (v. 26), and "nothing unclean will enter it" (v. 27).
Questions: Why doesn't the new Jerusalem need to shut its gates? What does it suggest about how we should live when we are not yet in that city?
Questions for Further Discussion
1. There's an old spiritual "Rock My Soul" that includes these lines: "So high, you can't get over it. So low, you can't get under it, So wide, you can't get around it. You gotta go in through the door." What is that song about? What or who is the door?
2. Also, after the fall of the Wall, Erich Honecker, the leader of East Germany (and the man who had earlier overseen the building of the Wall) became a persona non grata in his country. A Lutheran pastor took him and his wife into their home. They stayed there for several weeks before Honecker entered a Soviet military hospital near Berlin, suffering from liver cancer. Why do you think a Christian would invite a man with such a record and who was a pariah in that country to stay with his family?
3. If you are old enough to remember the collapse of the Berlin Wall, what thoughts and emotions did you experience when you first heard the news about it?
Responding to the News
This is a good occasion to review the world peacemaking efforts of your denomination and decide where and how you can help.

Jesus as Lord is a rare commodity in our Tongan Christianity, but Jesus as Savior had already flooded our churchy markets. | On Wed, 4/11/09, Sione M. Veituna <svei...@yahoo.com> wrote: Paul said, I consider all things to be lost for the excellence of knowing Christ my Lord. (Philp3:8-11). I don't know Jesus as a Haua. I know Him as Lord. It one thing to know Jesus as Saviour, it is another to know Him as LORD. A person who knows Jesus as his or her Lord would not dare to make Him not like one! You don't have to make Sisu a Haua to know that! Fakamolemole pe 'a Sikei, but the Haua is pointless. ================================= Tough words, tough love, tough guy!!! Truth hurts, truth divides, truth heals, truth sets us free. Jesus as Lord is a rare commodity in our Tongan Christianity, but Jesus as Savior had already flooded our churchy markets. Growing sentimentality towards Jesus fills our theologies--Jesus my buddy, Jesus my sisu Tonga, Jesus my fellow Haua and the unending recreations of Christ continues till our theologies suffocates Christ. Kau muimui atu he logic of the Pacific/Tongan recreation of Christ...Teu fa'u e sisu ko e Angahala pea teu vahe pehe ni...Anga(Habit/Character) mo e Hala(Way/Road)...put them together sisu ko e Angahala since he became man pea lau ko e angahala 'ehe kau Siu...therefore sisu ko e Angahala....Oh I will add on some scriptures and make a name for myself. Justify it by saying, jesus became Angahala, then he became a "ANGA"--my Habit, my character, then my Way, My Road. What a degrading cheap-shot un-biblical theology. Fokotu'u atu: feefee kapau ne pehee title ko e Sisu Ko e HAUA HAU pe HAU HAUA!!!!pea too e fakafamafa he HAU (Lord) kae redefine e HAUA ko e gypsy hangee ko e fokotu'u 'a TVaikona, pea fakamahino ne 'ikai haua 'alu noa, kae haua move from place to place with a mission gypsy means
