plugin makes website unresponsive for a while?

I noticed today that when I visit the Reports page, it hangs loading
the graphs (showing only those blue round loading bars) and after
that, every other page both in the admin section and the front does
not load for a long time. After a while the browser shows a LOT of
errors all starting with "WordPress database error: [MySQL server has
gone away] ..."
The complete website on a shared host webserver remains unresponsive
for a few minutes like that. Then (after it seems to have recovered)
all is well again... Untill I visit the Reports page again :(
So I updated the plugin to version 0.85, but the problem remained.
Then I uninstalled the plugin and uploaded again, and on the settings
page I removed the GA account settings. The Reports page then shows
fine (but only the Feedburner stats, ofcource). When re-entering my GA
account data (deliberatly wrong data) and hitting Continue, the
problem is back and the settings page hangs loading...
Normal PHP pages load fine, only as soon as MySQL queries are
involved, the server remains unresponsive.
