"Conformity" by Idstratus
"That you may retain your self-respect, it is better to displease the
people by doing what you know is right, than to temporarily please them by
doing what you know is wrong." - by William J. H. Boetcker:
Conformity is at best a necessary evil. While conformity to a certain
degree allows us to live peacefully with one another by agreeing on many
acceptable standards of behavior, carried to the extreme conformity can
often become a tool for destruction in the hands of zealots.
Within limits, it can serve to provide a commonality that a society
must share to be cohesive. Applied with Draconian measures, total
conformity seeks to destroy the individual by denying one's right to
express themselves freely. It becomes a form of mind control similar
to a mob mentality with anyone living beyond rigidly proscribed
boundaries being subject to persecution and/or punishment.
The greatest gift we possess is the ability to think for ourselves.
To allow a government or theology to form our thoughts to the extent
where it causes harm to others is to renounce this gift and place
ourselves on the level of a trained animal doing his master's bidding.
