Ahhhh a quantum koan that smells of patchouli
Mmmm
:-)
http://www.physorg.com/news89542035.html
I suppose the quantum answer would be "Both" ! But even if it had a door and
the door was closed it could still be open... Quantum tunning and all
that... :-)
I love this quantum stuff, so mysterious and yet testable, probabilistic and
yet with mind bending consequences (e.g. entanglement, spooky action at a
distance etc...)
The whole 'quantum nose' thing makes me think there may be far more macro
consequences of this then we can imagine... :-)
I spose we ae all made of quantum stuff...
Did they figure out how magnetism works yet?

Oxtail, I have written over ten different replies to this post and deleted
every one! You are like a lamp and me a moth! (I go mediatate on this before
I fall asleep!)
:-)
i suppose if you know emptiness of self it is inevitable that you will
question the corporeal and (perceived) nature of phenomena. Thus all the
subsequent mahayana spins on Sunyata.

A lot more depends on you.

Hekiganroku Case 65
A Non-Buddhist Philosopher Questions the Buddha
ENGO'S INTRODUCTION
It has no form and yet appears. It extends in every direction and is
boundless. It responds spontaneously and works in emptiness. Even though
you may be clever enough to deduce three from one instance, and to detect
the slightest deviation at a glance, and though you may be so powerful
that the blows fall from your stick like raindrops and your shouts sound
like thunderclaps, you are not yet to be compared with the man of
advanced enlightenment. What is the condition of such a man? See the
following.
MAIN SUBJECT
A non-Buddhist philosopher said to the Buddha, "I do not ask for words; I
do not ask for non-words." The World-honored One remained silent for a
while. The philosopher said admiringly, "The World-honored One, in his
great mercy, has blown away the clouds of my illusion and enabled me to
enter the Way."

yes, i have some awareness of my desires and aversions, and OCD
tendencies, and maybe some attachments have loosened - or maybe they
just shift around like they're on some sort of rota...but i'm miles
away from relinquishing them, and i'm not fully aware of why i do half
the stupid things i do. i see oxtail's gone into irritating questions
mode again. (this is a two for the price of one post. both free so
it's not even BOGOF!) are you unafraid to have a sudden
enlightenment, he asks, even if it means you will have to beg for food
for the rest of your life?
this straightaway takes me into aversion territory...after all, all
these years of being a welf for a living... begging does not appeal
to me. i help people to appeal so that they don't have to beg or
starve. oxtail, what are you talking about? riddles and koans, like
i've got all the time in the world...and after all these years, could
it be called sudden? oh yes it could, on these boards...
i suppose my direct answer, not that oxtail's asking me - i'm just
butinskis and offering a GOGOF, is, i don't like the sound of begging
for food, but putting that aside, sometimes i feel afraid and
sometimes i don't, and i don't know whether i really am or aren't.
However, i'm distinctly worried about the post-awakening cow that
falls on one's head almost immediately afterwards - the startling
vision of which has never left me since Lee Dillion cracked that one
open. i can't seem to help being leery of it, although it would
indeed be a wonderfully compassionate last act to break the poor cow's
fall, and an honour to help out a four-legged friend.
and it would be quick.
but i'm bad.

I think it is up to us to make up our own minds. Seems like we came to two
different conclusions. You took him 100% literally.
(Actually I worked with UK Street people for about two years - I would say
99% were in a pretty rotton state from rotting flesh (literally), 80% with
some chronic drug or alchol problem. Maybe in 2 years I met ONE happy and
'together' street person...). If I were a mendicant I think I would prefer a
warm climate :-)

Good point.

SUDDEN shifts of conciousnes happen all the time, especially in in therapy,
e.g. that "Ah ha" moment...

GOOD to be loose aboout this imo. I certainly am not the same person from
moment to moment, nor I suspect are you or for that matter most people...

Sacre bleu!
98% in rotton state and subject to continuing abuse
80% tanked up on drugs or alcohol
75% Mental health problems
Occasionaly with rotting flesh (I remember this - how can you forget the
smell?)
Many of these people did beg thus I concur with you Jan better to help them
off the streets. In the UK there are very few noble mendicants on the
streets in my experience...

merci.
i'm not about to argue with your experience.
i'm happy to say that from time to time, break -throughs occur for the
poorest people, and one long overdue happened in the pre-budget
report, unnoticed. it will cost the treasury a lot more than it will
get from taxing bankers bonuses. there are a lot more poor people,
that the revenue will stop robbing, than bank bonuses. big
politicshhh, big bottoms.

Do you need to know your mind,
Ok life is pointless whatever. Interjected 'meaning' is what gives it any
sembalance of a 'point' imo. 'Helping others' seems to be a good use of my
time... Sure if I sat under a Palm tree all day then I could interject a
'point' or 'no point' to my life - whatever - but I fear I would be
restless. I have skills to help/share so I would be restless. As I think I
have always said (though I am cetainly NOT attached to consistancy) -
Helping others helps me but only up to a point... If I get exausted doing
this, or taken advantage of then I need to take a step back....
To be is what it is all about
To do is optional
maybe I am a bit of a slave to too much 'doing'...
:-)
And of course I have far more work to do on my monkey mind...
:-)
Maybe I just need to accept that I am monkey!
nee former Bonobo :-))
For me, and many others, yes
For yet others there are other paths and 'end-point's
Thera or Maha each of equal value IMO.
Eaten, drank etc etc...
Not a question of like. Everyday people do this all the time (Mothers,
fathers etc) like this story I heard of a son who gave a kidney for his
alcoholic mother. Not sure if I could do that!
No enough
:-)
It is good IMO to try and understand my motivations?
Is life pointless if we cannot eat for others?
