That's because the liberal Democratic city in which I live realized years ago that mass transit was a good idea and invested heavily in it. Consequently, I can take the bus to work and to virtually anywhere in town, for an average cost of maybe 50 cents per day (many of the major bus routes are free). On nice days, since our city has also put a great deal of effort into making itself pedestrian-friendly, I can walk to work. I only need to use my 38 mpg Honda Civic for trips out of town.
