On April 29th, Don and Carla of the The Don & Carla radio show, emailed
and invited me to be a guest on their May 29th show, "Of Medicine &
Money." (see below) We had several pleasant email exchanges and I was
excited to be on their show.

On the morning on the broadcast, I posted a Newsgroup announcement that I
would be appearing, which included this note:

BEFORE BARRETT CALLED DON & CARLA

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=+%22don+%26+carla+%22+author:ilena%40san.rr.com&num=100&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&scoring=d&rnum=3&ic=1&selm=ilena-2905011256240001%4024-25-201-231.san.rr.com

"8:00 Ilena Rosenthal heads the world's largest support group for people
harmed by breast implants and other silicone products. Never implanted
herself, she is extremely concerned about the dis-information campaigns
funded by the silicone manufacturers and plastic surgeons that protect
their bottom lines and have harmed and continue to harm scores of
thousands of women.

She is also deeply concerned about the suppression of medical freedom, and
is currently defending herself on what she believes is a SLAPP suit by
"Quackwatch" head, Dr. Stephen Barrett et al."

A couple of hours before air time, Don & Carla called me very upset and
told me that they were sorry, but they would have to cancel my scheduled
show. When I asked if Stephen Barrett had called, they concurred and
explained to me that they did not have money to defend themselves in a
lawsuit. They explained they knew that they were protected by the law and
the First Amendment, but that they did not have the finances to defend
themselves in a court action.

I then looked at their revised website, and saw that two of Barrett's
close team members, both also on the boards of Quackwatch, NCAHF, and ACSH
(see graph) were to replace me, Tim Gorski and Wallace Sampson. (see
below)

After further discussions, they agreed to keep our air date, yet I was not
to discuss the lawsuit or Barrett. I agreed.

This is yet another clear example of Barrett's intimidation and libel
theats to control the media and silence any unflattering opinions of him
and his related organizations.

Hi Ilena!
We have a program coming up on Tuesday, May 29 whose topic is
"Medicine and Money." Sounds like you'd fit in there! How about a live
half-hour phone interview as part of that program. 8:30 pm Mountain time
okay? What phone number shall we call?

AFTER BARRETT CALLED DON & CARLA

Of Medicine and Money

6:00 Dr. Tim Gorsky is an OB/gyn in Arlington, Texas, practicing at "the
epicenter of managed care."  He has been in practice for 14 years.   He is
concerned about the financial plight of the MD under managed care.
Physicians are used to medical problems but the financial end of it is now
affecting quality of care he says.

6:25 Thomas Ssasz, M.D., was born in 1920 in Budapest, Hungary.  Over his
long career, he has been a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, professor, and
author.  He is Professor
of Psychiatry Emeritus at the State University of New York Health Science
Center in Syracuse, NY, Adjunct Scholar at the Cato Institute, Washington,
D.C., author and lecturer.  His 1961 book, The Myth of Mental Illness,
argued that 'mental illness' and psychiatry are often scientifically
untenable and morally indefensible.  He wants to end commitment on the
basis that a person is a threat to themselves.  He says psychiatry has
become a powerful arm of the modern nation state: imprisoning innocent
persons with "civil commitment," excusing guilty persons by the insanity
defense.  Other important books by Ssasz include The Ethics of
Psychoanalysis and Law, Liberty and Psychiatry, and his most recent
book, Pharmacracy.

6:50  David Oakes, www.mindfreedom.org, endured forced psychiatric
drugging in the mid-1970s.  He now is Director of Support Coalition
International and Editor of its journal, Dendron, uniting 100+ grassroots
groups in his campaign for human rights in the mental health context.

7:15 Wallace Simpson, M.D. is an expert on cancer treatment and concerned
about health treatments that he considers quackery.

7:40 Marilyn Azevedo wrote Defending Andy about her struggle to get
treatment for her son Andy from the insurance company.

8:05 Ilena Rosenthal heads the world's largest support group for people
harmed by breast implants and other silicone products. Never implanted
herself, she is extremely concerned about the dis-information campaigns
funded by the silicone manufacturers and plastic surgeons that protect
their bottom
lines and have harmed and continue to harm scores of thousands of women.

8:30 Debby  had to choose between living with her husband and children and
getting essential medication for her lupus which costs $900 a month.  She
now lives alone, gets the medicine, and sneaks dates with her husband. She
knows other folks in the same situation.

i think that anyone ticked off about that (supposed hulda lawyer) spammer's
posts to tsu doh nimh here on the NG should be equally (or even more)
disturbed by this type of behavior. (supposing, of course, that this all
really happened)

if this did happen, barrett and his crew are particularly clear examples of
the extremist sorts who think that no one should be able to publicly
disagree with them. and barrett seems to be very insecure to boot, if you
ask me.

do you suppose i'll get sued now???

So, you got to go on air? How were you prevented from speaking your
mind, except for the restraint on mentioning a court case? I don't
know what the law is like where you are, but here it wouldn't be the
other party I was frightened of but of the court itself, because to go
on air and discuss the case would be contempt of court. Incarceration
at the judge's pleasure!

I know someone being sued for libel (funnily enough, for publishing
someone else's words on their web site). The initial response was to
publish everything that came in from the lawyers. The courts have
decided that the contempt matter will be heard and finalised before
the libel case is addressed. Much time and money is being wasted.

As I said, I don't know whether the same rules apply, but I think that
courts take themselves seriously in much the same way everywhere.

If there are any Californian lawyers out there, they might like to
comment on this.

Barrett's Gang had no similar restraints ... you obviously did not
properly read the post ... these people felt so threatened that they were
ready to cancel me to avoid being Barrett'd with a Libel suit ...

how did you miss that?
