Actor Dennis Farina arrested at L.A. airport

LOS ANGELES, May 11 (Reuters) - Dennis Farina, a former policeman who built
a Hollywood career playing detectives, was arrested on Sunday at Los Angeles
International Airport for carrying a loaded gun on his way to board a plane,
police said.
Farina, 64, told police he brought the .22 caliber, semi-automatic pistol
with him on a drive from Arizona to Los Angeles and forgot it was in his
briefcase when he tried to pass through airport security, police said in a
statement.
He was scheduled to take a United Airlines flight to his home in Chicago.
"Farina was very apologetic and cooperative with officers," police said.
"However, he had no apparent authority to carry a concealed weapon at the
time of his arrest."
The actor was initially booked on one misdemeanor count of carrying a loaded
firearm and bail was set at $25,000. The charge was upgraded later to a
felony after police confirmed the gun was not registered, and bail was
raised to $35,000.
Farina was a Chicago police officer for nearly 20 years before taking up
acting in the 1980s. He has starred in movies such as "Get Shorty" and
"Sidewalks of New York" and is perhaps best known in the role of New York
Detective Joe Fontana on the popular television crime series, "Law & Order."

I checked CA's gun laws,and they don't require registration on
handguns,EXCEPT if you are bringing them into CA.
THEN,you are a "handgun importer",and have to register them.
And they must meet the CA specs for handguns;be on their "approved" list.
I believe they got Farina on the "importer" nonsense.
(although he was -LEAVING- CA.)
I guess if you leave CA with your guns,you first have to register them,or
commit a felony upon return.

Yep, they have enough on him for violating concealed weapon laws,
loaded gun laws, and for having the gun in a secure airport area. The
"unregistered" charge is pure crap, just to pile on more charges, not
to mention that there may be a completely legal reason that he has an
"unregistered" gun, even if it is not on the current approved list.
Looks like they are setting him up for a high profile "example".

As it happens, you can carry a gun to the airport, so long as it is
unloaded and locked in a suitable container and packed in your hold baggage.
Harry Connick, jr., made the same mistake a few years ago. He paid a
fine and that was the end of it. Let's see if Mr. Farina's attorney's
reduces the LA airport's charges.

You can actually carry it (legally) all the way INTO most airports
(if you can carry it there legally outside the airport).
You cannot take the arms through the security point legally but for
most airports that is well within the building.

Mixed feelings about that -- the whole thing is stupid for such incidents,
but the more trouble these make the more likely the law will be
adjusted to something sensible.

Oh..In florida, where they can't even vote right......
In almost every state I have lived in (6) you can not caryy on Federal
Lands...Airports, Military bases, etc....
That includes the roads to the terminals....
Yes, most people do, but you can get arrested....

Actually as I understand it our airport is some kind of City semi-
private corporation thing sort of like the post office is federally.
This actually opens another can of worms in that they periodically
decide to do the car search person pat-down thing at a roadblock
driving into the airport! They usually aren't out there but have
done it in the past. Being "private" it's sort of like the rock
concert pat-down thing. The actual Federal restricted zones are way
inside the airport where only passengers go.
As for all guns needing to be "registered" I watch TV and go to the
movies so we all know it's true. Watch any Hollywood production and
when the cop finds a gun there is always the "it's an unregistered
gun" line in the script! Doesn't matter if the show is in las Vegas or
Texas or Vermont! It's just a little California reminder that all
guns really "need" to be registered with your government! I'll bet
Farina has mouthed the line himself many times in his career. Oh, the
irony!
Say, wasn't there a proposed national law to allow cops and retired
cops to carry anywhere in the U.S.? Did it not pass yet?

Almost every State I lived in did NOT require Fire arm
registrations...Except for NY....

Go climb the fence with your CCW and see how quickly the Feds charge you.
Most Airports are on a LEASE from the FAA.

Don't have to do that. Simply go into the departing passenger entry to
the ticket counters......or the johns....or the restaurant. As long as
it is on the outside of the security checks. I cannot, for example, meet
my niece at the arrival gate or see her off at the boarding gate......but
I can accompany her to purchase her ticket to the Bahamas.
