Obama-bashers see literary gold

As much as both men might hate to admit it, Barack Obama has been
very, very good to Mark Levin.
Levin is living the talk-radio dream: His three-hour broadcast is
aired on more than 150 stations to more than 5 million listeners a
day. And he has the hottest subject in the world: Obama.
The president, Levin pronounces almost daily, is a failure, a liar and
a “statist” who is trying to destroy individual freedom. The
broadcaster is accompanied by a Greek chorus of callers whose love for
Levin is rivaled only by their disdain for the president of the United
States.
His book “Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto” debuted at
No. 1 on The New York Times best-seller list and has remained on the
list for a remarkable 13 weeks, selling, Levin says, a total of
800,000 copies to date. (Nielsen BookScan puts the number at 714,000,
but its figures don’t include sales from Wal-Mart and a handful of
other prominent outlets.)
That’s a monster hit by publishing standards, and industry insiders
say it is largely due to a wave of anxiety coursing through
conservative and red-state America over the direction of Obama’s
policies.
“I’m seeing a lot of people, conservatives and other people, who are
starting to get extremely concerned that permanent damage can be done
or is being done to their country,” Levin told POLITICO.
Much has been made of the favorable media coverage Obama is receiving
as television broadcasters pursue ratings and magazine editors pursue
newsstand sales, but there’s an equal and opposite reaction going on
in the world of conservative media. Frustration with Barack Obama is
fueling listener intensity and book-buying binges at the same time it
gives a boost to the careers of conservative figures like Levin, whose
fans call him “the Great One.”
“Barack Obama is great for business for talk-radio folks on the
right,” said Michael Harrison, publisher of the industry magazine
Talkers. “This is simple psychology and mathematics. The whole name of
the game is to create a niche where people are motivated and see
danger lurking.”
That’s as true in book publishing as in talk radio. “We are very
bullish on our books coming out for the rest of this year,” says Marji
Ross, president of Regnery Publishing, a conservative house. “Our
little motto here is, what’s bad for the country could be good for our
business.”
In July, Regnery will put out commentator Michelle Malkin’s “Culture
of Corruption: Obama and His Team of Tax Cheats, Crooks, and Cronies.”
“The fact that President Obama is in the White House and so aggressive
makes all of these books more urgent and probably will make them sell
better than they would have,” says Ross.
Three of the top five best-selling nonfiction books on Amazon.com last
week were written by conservatives: The paperback edition of Glenn
Beck’s “Common Sense: The Case Against an Out-of-Control Government,
Inspired by Thomas Paine ” was No. 1. Levin’s “Liberty & Tyranny” was
No. 2, and Dick Morris’s “Catastrophe” was No. 4. According to Nielsen
BookScan, Beck’s paperback has sold 258,000 copies, and “Catastrophe”
has sold 33,000.
Morris’s book, co-authored with his wife, Eileen McGann, is
extravagantly subtitled “How Obama, Congress and the Special Interests
Are Transforming a Slump Into a Crash, Freedom Into Socialism, and a
Disaster Into a Catastrophe ... and How to Fight Back.”The highest-
ranking Obama book on Amazon’s list is former Newsweek reporter
Richard Wolffe’s look at the 2008 campaign, “Renegade: The Making of a
President,” which occupies eighth place. Nielsen BookScan says the
book has sold 30,000 copies to date.
On television, the Fox News Channel announced that it had all of cable
news’ top 10 shows in total viewers in the second quarter, anchored by
conservative hosts including Beck, Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity. The
network is on pace for its best year ever — posting numbers that are
even better in 2009 than they were during the hard-fought campaign
year of 2008.
And there’s much more to come. Threshold Editions, the conservative
imprint of Simon & Schuster, has three books waiting in the wings —
all potential big sellers. Beck is back with “Arguing With Idiots:
America’s Next Epic Battle: 1776 vs. 1984” on sale Sept. 29. Jerome
Corsi, best known for his role in the anti-John Kerry Swift Boat
Veterans for Truth’s effort, will have a book out Oct. 13 called
“America for Sale: Fighting the New World Order, Surviving a Global
Depression, and Preserving USA Sovereignty.” Conservative talk radio
host Jerry Doyle will join their ranks with “Have You Seen My Country
Lately?” which is due out on Dec. 29.
A host of mainstream conservative politicians are also taking pen to
paper. Threshold signed former Vice President Dick Cheney to a book
deal in June. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal’s book “On Solid Ground” is
due in January. And Republican National Committee Chairman Michael
Steele has an upcoming tome called “Right Now.”
What’s driving this thriving cottage industry is a sense of
frustration and anger among the Republican Party’s core conservative
base — and a power vacuum at the top of the party that lacks a
national leader to set its course. At a time of near-total electoral
defeat for conservative politicians, conservative pundits have become
the most powerful voices on the right. Indeed, conservative
broadcasting legend Rush Limbaugh got in a public tiff earlier this
year with Steele that left Democrats cackling that Limbaugh, not the
chairman, was the true leader of the GOP.
The emotions fueling this media boomlet sometimes border on a barely
suppressed rage. A website maintained by Levin’s fans, where people
chew over the host’s ideas and new book, brims with anger at the
president. Wrote one reader: “I CANT SLEEP SEEING this country being
destroyed DAMM IT OVER my dead body i will let this happen/THESE
BASTARDS HAVE GOT TO BE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY.”
Wrote another: “Bottomline, do you know of any way we can remove these
idiots before this country goes down the crapper? I WILL HELP!!!
Should I buy a gun? Should I store produce, etc?”
And a third took the rhetoric a step further: “Another American
revolution will have to be fought — there will be blood.”
That last comment provoked a response from the website’s moderator,
who wrote: “That has KOOK written all over it.”
Regnery’s Ross says that kind of rhetoric is increasingly common. “I
hear a lot of people talking about revolution,” she says. “I don’t
think it is the crazy right-wing terrorist revolution — it’s a sense
that there’s been an abdication of responsibility, and at some point
soon, there will be a reckoning or a tipping point.”
Levin says the anger on the right is driven by a sense of helplessness
in the face of sweeping changes imposed by the Obama administration.
“Damage is being done that will be difficult to reverse even in future
elections,” he said, citing health care reform and cap-and-trade
energy legislation as two examples. “You could spend the next 20 to 30
years trying to argue why some small aspect of it ought to be changed.
You’re changing your form of government completely.”
But his book is not an anti-Obama screed, Levin says. He began writing
it in the summer of 2007, before Obama was the leading Democratic
contender for president. He finished it after the election and added
several sections specifically on Obama. Levin said his book is an
attempt to lay down the basic philosophical tenets of conservatism at
a time when he feels they may be under attack. “I’ve had this book in
my head for years,” Levin said. “It’s just that Obama so perfectly
illustrates the statist that I write about. I guess it’s more his
timing than my timing that has drawn attention to the book.”
To conservative talk-radio hosts, Obama presents much more of a threat
to the country than Bill Clinton ever did. Levin says Obama is more of
a “hard left” politician with a more sweeping agenda.
And on a business level, that represents opportunity. Andrew Wilkow, a
36-year-old conservative host of “The Wilkow Majority” on SIRIUS XM
Radio, says the Clinton years helped fuel the rise of Limbaugh. And
it’s possible the same thing may happen with Obama.

That is also a lie. Obama is _spending_ a lot of money, so far about $50
Billion, attempting to rectify the results of programs and policies that
your team bankrupted the nation with.
"More of the same" isn't going to fix the problems you guys left. You'd
better hope that Obama's policies are successful rather than bitching
about the disasters your team wrought and trying to shift responsibility
to others.

(A) you removed GM from the DJI and then put another "company" in the
*AVERAGE* to get that average back up, but that actual loss is still there.
(B) You have *PRINTED* (2 trillion dollars plus).... That devalued the
dollar and raised the relative value of hard assets like corporate owned
property.
SO if you think you have recovered then buy all in and I'll have a
really good laugh as this precurser to the real Depression fades into an
*economic apocalypse* .
Obama has painted himself into into a corner with the economy, we are
now destined to crash, the only question is how long Obama can
manipulate things to look good, because when he stumbles and the fools
like you get slapped in the face with the reality of losing your ass,
the whole thing will tank.

Yes but that's no reason to proclaim the problem solved when all that
was done was you selected new winners to place in a list that measures
"performance". It sort of destroys all the past data and you have to
start new as though you had faulty data. (reset to Zero)
What if 50% of the market fails and you pick new successful businesses
to measure the DJIA? You'd pick those that are sound, but the market
has decreased by 50% of the companies so you are ignoring that the
market is 50% of the size of what it was. You might say wow a recovery
and yet the GDP could be 50% of what it was, the economy could be
falling off a cliff and the DJIA is looking like it's recovering while
in fact nothing is any better.

Confidence won't pay the mortgage. Obama's credit cards are filled to
the Limit. Obama can *Print, Borrow or tax* Obama has Printed and
Borrowed, all that's left is tax and that will set the economy in a
spiral down into the toilet. We won't recover with that monkey on our back.
So here we go, and Obama is about to hit the trifecta, when he raises
taxes he will be captain of a sinking ship. He will be left with
nowhere to turn and no way out. It will mean a long and hard
Depression. As with most Depressions it too will have been a creation
of our Government.

There are other market indices you can look at. The DJIA is privately
managed, and I don't think the administration is either manipulating it
or proclaiming our economic problems solved.

The DJIA doesn't measure the size of the economy as a whole. It is one
of many measures of the NYSE. The size of the economy is measured by
the GDP, among other indicators.

I'm not a big fan of the Fed, but the time has come for some sort of
improved regulation and oversight of the financial industry.

We won't recover by doing nothing, either.

The ship was already sinking when he became it's captain. But anyone
who claims he knows with certainty exactly what caused the ship to start
sinking, or exactly what will stop it from sinking, is lying.
To carry the ship analogy further, what Obama is doing is
counter-flooding. This is taking on additional water intentionally, to
keep a sinking ship on an even keel so repairs can be made, and to
prevent a sudden and catastrophic capsize from occurring. Done
correctly, it can save the ship.

government relies on. Reducing the private sector cuts down on that tax
