When Phoenix police officer Natalie Simonick saw 18 year old Christian
Felix out after dark in March, she suspected he was violating curfew. But
Felix told her he was walking six miles home from his job at McDonalds, as
he had missed the bus and didn't own a bicycle. Simonick was so impressed
with the teen's work ethic that she decided to buy him a bicycle. Her
squad members taught him to ride it, and traffic cops even donated a
helmet. Felix said the officers' kindness was a welcome surprise. "These
days, you don't see anything like that." He said.

What we do know is that what appears to be a good kid was done a good
deed by some cops who give the profession a good name. I'm happy with that.

I'm guessing that they taught him the proper hand signals to use and
what lane to ride in, etc. He might have been unfamiliar with
derailleur gearsets and handbrakes if he had only ridden one of the
smaller bikes. I see a lot of kids using skateboards for
transportation around here. I remember Phoenix being pretty flat. A
skateboard might be an effective alternative to a bicycle there.

I saw a cyclist use a hand signal to indicate a turn the other day. It
was the first time I'd seen any one use them in many years.

Here in Alabama we still have that problem in the fresh water. Plenty of gators to go around here. Wildlife dept just hauled one out of pond 1/4 mile from my house. He was 10 1/2 ft. long.
