Yesterday, May 20, 2013, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry F.
McCarthy announced that more than 2,660 illegal firearms have been
recovered in 2013 as the result of strategic policing initiatives that
continue to protect public safety.
To highlight their efforts in seizing illegal firearms, Superintendent
McCarthy discussed several recent incidents in Area South. On
Saturday, May 18, 2013, Englewood District tactical officers and Gang
Enforcement officers responding to a call of a person with a gun
arrested a alleged gang member and seized a machine gun that was in
his possession. Further investigating they uncovered another alleged
24-year-old gang member who was armed with a 90mm machine gun within
extended magazine and live ammunition. The weapon was promptly seized
and the alleged gang member was charged with unlawful use of a
weapon-machine gun/automatic weapon.
It was also pointed out that in the Englewood District on Friday, in
an unrelated incident, officers arrested a gang member and convicted
felon on parole after responding to a call of battery in progress in
the area. Officers observed the 23-year-old offender fleeing the area,
armed with a handgun and pursued him on foot. The officers recovered a
loaded .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun and arrested and charged the
offending gang member with unlawful use of a weapon – felony/use
firearm/parole and firearm registration certificate required in
addition to a warned for parole violation.
