Palin angered by 'sexist' Newsweek cover
Tue Nov 17, 2:41 pm ET
For the second time since Sarah Palin stepped into the national
political spotlight, a photo of the former Republican vice-
presidential candidate featured on the cover of Newsweek magazine is
sparking controversy. Palin herself blasted the "out-of-context" cover
as "sexist" on her Facebook page.
Originally published in the August 2009 issue of Runners World, the
photo features the former Alaska governor in short runner's shorts. It
was part of a multi-photograph slideshow that accompanied an article
about Palin and her love for the sport titled, "I'm A Runner." In her
Facebook post late last night, Palin took issue with Newsweek using a
photo from an article about health and fitness to promote an analysis
piece contemplating her relevance as a political figure:
"The choice of photo for the cover of this week's Newsweek is
unfortunate. When it comes to Sarah Palin, this "news" magazine has
relished focusing on the irrelevant rather than the relevant. The
Runner's World magazine one-page profile for which this photo was
taken was all about health and fitness -- a subject to which I am
devoted and which is critically important to this nation. The out-of-
context Newsweek approach is sexist and oh-so-expected by now. If
anyone can learn anything from it: it shows why you shouldn't judge a
book by its cover, gender, or color of skin. The media will do
anything to draw attention -- even if out of context.
The reaction to the Newsweek cover has predictably sparked outrage
from conservative supporters of Palin and kudos from liberals who
oppose her. CBN commentator David Brady called the cover "a new low"
for the "biased" magazine, adding that Newsweek has a history of
portraying liberal women as "heroes for the next generation," while
portraying conservative women like Palin as "nuts and dopey."
Meanwhile, documentary photographer Nina Berman hailed the cover as
"brilliant" and "shrewd" for using a "propped photo where Palin is an
obvious participant ... to show how far out she is willing to travel
on the road of self promotion" while "shield[ing] themselves from what
would have been the inevitable criticism if they had dolled her up
themselves and posed her the same way."
The current cover flap isn't the first time Newsweek has generated
controversy with a photograph of Palin. The October 13, 2008, issue
featured an extreme close-up of Palin that seemed to be devoid of the
high-tech retouching often employed by magazines. Conservatives
claimed this highlighted some of Palin's supposed "flaws," like
wrinkles around her eyes.
Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham told Yahoo! News that the photo choice was
simply the "most interesting image available":
"We chose the most interesting image available to us to illustrate the
theme of the cover, which is what we always try to do. We apply the
same test to photographs of any public figure, male or female: does
the image convey what we are saying? That is a gender-neutral
standard."

NewsWeek, TIME and most major newspapers contract with writers from

hasn't read it, with funding administered by a Treasury chief who didn't
pay his taxes because he didn't understand TurboTax, overseen by an obese
Surgeon General and financed by a country that's nearly broke.
What could possibly go wrong?
That's right, Palin is the best they have. Deep down they know she
hasn't a chance in Hell of being elected president. But compared to the
other bums in that party she's way ahead. They just had her at a book
signing event and like fifteen hundred people showed up and some waited
over night to see her. Not far away Mike Huckaby had a get together and
a couple hundred people showed up. As far as a legitimate presidential
candidate and a qualified one, Huckaby blows Palin away. But he's not
nearly as popular as she is. So that shows the unbelievably bad
situation the republicans are in. All their legitimate candidates are so
boring no one gives a crap about them and the one person they care about
, Palin, hasn't an icecube's chance in Hell of getting elected. Yep, it
looks like another season in the basement for the republican party.

Well, you got that wrong, Snicker. The difference between the left and
the right is the left has many sources of news and information. You guys
only have one place to get right wing slanted news and that is Fox. As
you often point out, the main stream media is biased liberal. But there
are plenty of places and many degrees of liberalism for liberals to
choose from. Not so with you. I mean, where else can you get your
slanted information? It's Fox or nothing. I'm talking TV here, not
radio. We all know you right wingers have a monopoly of AM radio
stations. As for TV you watch Fox or you're out of luck. That means if
you don't see it on Fox you don't see it. Which is what I said to begin
with.
Hawke
Ahhhh....<TMT holding hand up>....Sarah can see Russia from

The reason for this is simple.
Truth only has one version.
In most states, the only way you can vote in a primary (either Democratic
or Republican) is if you are registered as an Independent. Then you can
choose one. You are "re-registering" in order to do that. IOW, you are
intionally bypassing the system and trying to have a voice in a party you
are not a member of. You call that honest?
'Not following you here, RD. Roughly half the states have closed
primaries -- you can only vote for candidates of the party for which you are
registered. The rest of the states have various versions of open or
semi-closed primaries. These work in a variety of ways but, in general, you
can vote for someone in either party, or even both parties, in the case of
Wisconsin and maybe one or two other states.
What do you mean that you must be registered as an Independent to vote in a
primary?

Poor choice of words. I was using them as applicable to Lookout's case
only. He re-registers to vote in a party he is not a member of. Many
states only allow registered party members to vote in the Democratic or
Republican Parties. Some states allow Independents to vote in one
primary or the other, but not both. My state is that way and that was
what I was intending to say.
However, that said, I don't do it. I feel that if you wish to promote a
party's primary, then join that party....become an actual member of it
for the purposes of expressing that party. Don't change registration
simply to vote on a member you feel that your actual party can bear.

I agree. The whole idea got started with Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos," which
he started a year ago last February. He was trying to keep Obama from
winning the primary by asking Republicans to cross over and vote for Hilary
