Lisbon Memorial For Martyred Turkish Diplomats

07 June 2013

A monument in memory of Turkish diplomats killed in a terrorist attack
in 1982 will be opened Friday in Lisbon

Martyred Diplomats Memorial, a monument built in Lisbon in
commemoration of Turkish diplomats Erkut Akbay and his wife Nadide
Akbay, as well as all public officials martyred while on mission
abroad, will be inaugurated on Friday, a statement by Turkish Ministry
of Foreign Affairs said.

Erkut and Nadide Akbay were killed in an attack on the Turkish Embassy
in Lisbon perpetrated by a radical Armenian terrorist group.

The inauguration coincides with the 31st anniversary of the attack,
the statement said.

The monument was built right across the street from the Akbays' house
where they were murdered. Their children will attend the ceremony,
the foreign ministry said.

"The monument, symbolizing a common stance against terrorism
irrespective of its source, will bear witness to the principles of
peace, freedom and co-existence that Turkey and Portugal jointly
uphold," the statement said.
