After carefully considering the various nominees and researching
their crimes, I have concluded that the USA is indeed #1 in holocausts,
although Germany comes a close second. Here's a list of the countries
whose accomplishments in the field of inhumanity should win people's
disgust:
1. USA-- a long continuous history of committing holocausts, terrorism,
imperialism, and other attrocities. From the genocide of Indians to
the slavery of blacks (complete with widespread rape and torture); from
the imperialist annexation of Texas to the imperialist war launched against
Mexico in 1846 (not very bloody really, so this is pretty standard
capitalism; not really the vicious brutal type that wins the USA their
award); from the terrorist aerial bombings of civilian targets that has killed
millions over the last 50+ years (and maimed millions more) to the murder of
millions of unarmed civilians by CIA-imposed puppet dictators; I salute
you-- you are more vicious, brutal, and sick than any country on the face
of the earth.
2. Germany-- really comes close only because of a short period in history
under Hitler. Capitalism did prosper under Hitler (what with all the profits
from the war and killings, including the profits from the sale of ovens and
from the sale of soap made from the bodies of Jews and communists murdered
in the Nazi concentration camps) until the war was lost. But capitalism
does not always have to be as vicious as Hitler (even if capitalism is by
nature at least somewhat cruel, as well as economically inefficient).
3. Spain-- for attrocities committed not only during the Inquisition (which
mostly involved the very Christian murder of non-Christians) but more
importantly for their attrocities in the colonies, most importantly against
the Indians of Central and South America (but even there, as indicated in
THE BOOK OF THE HOPI), the Spanish were saints compared to what the
Americans did.
4. Britain-- mostly for attrocities committed in their colonies (a good
example is the attempted genocide of Australian aborigines), but the
British were actually the ones who started the idea of aerial terror
bombardments of civilian targets in 1940 (and continued throughout
the war, but they were small stuff compared to the much larger and
more gruesome US air force that employed firebombings and later
atomic bombs). It is quite possible that the Nazis became so vicious
with murdering civilians at least partially in reaction to that terror
bombing (note that the "final solution" for the Jews was not begun
until 1941). Note also that the terror bombings of civilian targets
has always been counterproductive in terms of fighting an enemy (for
instance, German armaments productions was higher in the final
months of the war than at any other time-- the terror bombings
increased the fascists' will to resist and mostly destroyed city
dwellings as opposed to industrial targets, much less military
targets).
5. France-- for attrocities committed in their colonies.
There are of course others who deserve mention (such as
Rwanda), but the top 5 should do here.
Note that Russia (because of Stalin, as well as Lenin), China
(because of Mao), and Cambodia (because of Pol Pot) were all considered,
but clearly were not evil enough to be put in the same category as the
above mentioned countries. Stalin's execution of 120,000 people within
the context of a guerilla civil war (and attempts by the Nazi Germans
and fascist Japanese to disrupt and takeover Russia) seem mild
in comparison (although without doubt also evil, because many of
those executed were no doubt innocent). Pol Pot had a significant
number of people killed for collaborating in the USA's murder of
500,000 of his own people and had another large group killed for
attempting a coup against him (although the coup was probably justified
given his military attacks on Vietnam that was more typical of a
capitalist power). Mao could actually be called a saint compared to
capitalism in general, since his policies reduced the death rate
in China significantly (saving tens of millions of lives each year), and he
even had those responsible for killing the 35,000 unarmed civilians under
his rule tried and punished (although, as leader, he is partly to blame
for such terrible excesses).
As always, I welcome rational replies and references. But it's
likely that I'll get nothing but personal attacks from those who want
the USA to continue being #1.
Sincerely,
Dr. Austin Murphy (Professor of Finance, Oakland University)
P.S. Someone has asked me what I meant when responding under this thread
about the higher quality of life under communism. Well, besides having
nothing in comparison to capitalism with respect to holocausts,
communism also has far less unemployment, poverty, crime, drugs, and money
anxieties. As a result, people actually have more personal freedom than
under capitalism. Some studies have even shown greater individuality
under communism, as people in communist countries have more diverse
opinions than people in the USA, where one's opinion can be regimented
and roboticized through social and economic pressure (where one's social
standing and job depend on having the "right" opinion on matters). But
that is to be expected in capitalism, where people tend to be enslaved to
their jobs and the pursuit of wealth and consumption, as opposed to
freely seeking their own individual happiness and fulfillment.

>What kind of shit school is Oakland University?
Now, now, you don't have to start into writing obscenities when
you read the facts. Oakland University (and its business school) are
highly accredited.
> You're a professor of
>finance, and you get the numbers 120,000 and 20 million mixed up?
No, I merely am correcting the numbers put out by absurd
propaganda that sounds like it emanates from MEIN KAMPF.
> Gee, my
>Ukrainian neighbors would have to disagree.
Please do provide a source that disputes the 120,000 figure
that is based on the release of newest information from Soviet archives
as published in BERIA (and released by anticommunist Yeltsin).
>Fortunately, they weren't
>"kulaks" so they were spared, and evidently their stomachs retain what
>little food they had wel.
Yes, it is true that the rich farmers (the kulaks) did try to
commit mass murder by withholding food from the cities (in an attempt
to extract maximum prices and profits). Fortunately, Stalin prevented
this mass murder by collectivisation, although the armed resistance of
the capitalist mass murderers did result in a civil war that caused
the death of many (as well as the imprisonment of millions of those
kulaks who throughout the civil war were busy destroying food in an
further attempt to commit mass murder on innocent city dwellers).
>Oh well, it's morons like you who helping to
>prove our education system is in complete disarray.
Yes, many feel that those who don't regurgitate the general
propaganda line are not very smart, since we gain nothing
personaly by telling the truth and are subject to personal attacks
by zombies like you. But you must remember most in education do
follow the standard anticommunist propaganda line, which is why
even many of the college educated believe in fairy tales.
I should also provide my standard disclaimer here: I do not
teach economics or politics or history; I teach finance. But it is
important to have a perspective on those other matters when talking
about things like ethics. Through propaganda more effective than
that of Goebbels, most Americans believe that the USA is the "good"
guys. The truth of the matter is the exact opposite.

Dr. Austin Murphy

20 Million people perished because of Stalins purges and policies. Of
course, Dr. Seuss also left out the Catholic church who has tortured, burnt,
maimed, hung... etc more people in the name of their Christ than anyone
anywhere in the name of anything else.
Go back to school, kid, and do some reading. You're too green to write.

Things are worse in Oakland than I thought. You aren't reading books by
Leonard Jefferies (CCNY) are you?
Stick to finance Mr. Murphy.
1. The worst genocide in human history was committed in China by Manchurians.
2. African slavery is thousands of years older than European
involvement. Africans sold Africans to Europeans. And it was
Europeans, including Americans, who made the first step toward eliminating
the slave trade. It still exists in parts of Africa.
3. Stalin killed possibly 20 million people through his policies and by
direct order. The best estimates I've seen for the numbers of Natives in
pre-Columbian American says that there were probably about 26 million -
the vast majority living in what is now considered "Latin America" and
Mexico. Most Native Americans died due to exposure to European diseases
and not through direct murder. No one knows how many millions were
murdered as part of state policy in Communist China. No body is quite
certain how many are being murdered in Tibet.
What I find most appalling about your lack of historical knowledge is that
you're a teacher and can possibly influence impressionable minds.

The USA is nothing more than the home office of multinational business
organizations who have made anything like national identity and
sovereignty as irrelevant as the Roman "Republic" was at the time of
Augustus Caesar. Look around yourself there in Oakland. Do we look like
"#1"?
Irony has a way of biting off big chunks of our asses.

But isn't that the point? It is the multinationals and their
subservient organizations such as WTO, and some national governments,
such as the US, that are running the world.

"It's not merely cruelty that makes men love war, it's excitement."

The federal government is a giant self-sustaining bureaucracy coupled with
elected officials who, for the most part, represent special comercial
interest groups. This edifice has evolved to channel money and influence
in such a manner as to create the best possible environment for the
maintainance of corporate profits. Corporate money dominates the entire
system. The president of the United States is the employee of the interest
groups that payed for his election campaign. Republican or Democrat, it
amounts to little more. Libertarians are demo-publicans without a
discernible environmental policy.
The ghettos and slums and unemployment and general decline that you see
around you are not the goal but the bi-product of this system. The poor
and working poor have little money and thus no clout. (That is, unless
they burn down Beverley Hills - burning down ghettos doesn't count).
The political system is, ironically, the only place where the people have
the power to change the slide towards a multinational corporate despotism.
But increasingly, the pervailing propaganda targets the political system
for suspicion. "Big government" can't be trusted. Government itself is an
imposition on our liberties. (No mention of Big Business, which is the
source of the corruption.)
It basically comes down to this - self-government is a threat to corporate
profits. The national government, as the representitive of the will of the
people, threatens the undemocratic mechanisms of corporate
decision-making.

Of course not; it was the RICH who prospered in the war time
Third Reich, not the ordinary citizen.
Note how NONE of the four eras of modern Germany have ever
been a threat to the rich, neither Imperial Germany, "Social
Democratic" Weimer Germany, "National Socialist" Germany,
or the Allied installed Germany of today; in fact, some of
the very rich from Germany in 1910 continue to be rich today,
continuing their exploitation without a break!

So? The Dresden bombings were 100% worthless as military
strategy; it may have even prolonged the war, adding hundreds
of thousands of more casualties from both sides.

Fool, there's an Oakland on the east coast too.
But as long as we are making ad-hominem remarks, I'll join in.
There is indeed a professor J.A. Murphy at Oakland University. That
Murphy teaches courses in portfolio and investment analysis as well as
international financial management. He is the author of numerous
publications, the latest being "The Determinants of Exchange Rates
Between Two Major Currencies" Multinational Business Review
(forthcoming).
The odd thing is that all of this is immanently capitalist. Not a
single one of prof. Murphy's publications shows any resemblence to the
Marxist rants posted to this NG.
So, what are we to conclude?
1. Is Murphy a hypocrite? Does he play capitalist to his academic peers
while playing the Marxist firebrand to us?
2. Or is the person posting to this newsgroup really prof. Murphy at
all? Perhaps the real Murphy flunked a student who is now trying to
damage his reputation.
