How many times has the party in power actually gained seats in the
midterms? I heard 'two' but I'm not sure.
It's not as rare as a shutout - where one party gains no seats in the
House, no seats in the Senate, and no Governorships - which happened
today.
I'd still prefer seanpit back over drdach, if there was a way.
It hasn't really been an improvement.

If you had any idea what "proof" meant you'd have a chance of knowing
some science.
Not really. The country is still highly divided thanks to a highly
divisive president, that same president will prevent any real change
from coming out of the Democratic Congress, and the highly partisan
political atmosphere created by the moron in the white house will make
the Democrats scared of doing anything more than the status quo.
Ballot inititives have gone anti-gay across the country (except
Arizona) showing the country is still full of bigots and racists. One
bright spot is the abortion ban that could have led to a Roe-v-Wade
challenge was defeated in South Dakota, but only by 55.6% to 44.4%
which isn't all that much.
Hovind going to jail is certainly good. Hopefully that idiot Coulter

the bush grenades have been dropped on it over the last 6 years. In
fact, it would surprise me if the damage this one man has done to the
US could be reversed in my lifetime (I'm 36).
The September 11 attacks weren't as damaging to this country as was the
election in Florida in November of 2000. And it's not close.

Working to end evil is indeed an "ideology," but I for one find it
extremely interesting that you believe only educated and well-informed
people are happy at seeing evil thwarted.
It just got better. Rumsfeld just resigned (or was fired).
Oh, I'm sure they'll invite him back for a picnic, BBQ or perhaps

It is going to be interesting. Lets see, we have 49 Democrat senators,
49 Republicans, one Independent, one recount, and one Republican VP
who is rumored to want to resign/retire for reasons of health.
If I were the Dems, I would be more worried about whether Jim Baker
has bought an airline ticket to Connecticut than about whether he
travels to Virginia.

I think the gist of this is that governments (or the ruling party) are

anything.

Lieberman is a conservative Democrat, but he's still to the left of the
Republicans. Even if he did get 70% of the Republican vote. If Allen
loses this is all academic. If not, we'll be seeing a lot more of Mr.

Apparently, if Allen asks for a recount in Virginia, it can not begin
before November 27th, and can last for up to ten days. Current best
guess is that he will not. Not so much that he sees the hypocricy in
doing so after he was so vociferous about ending the recount in Florida
in 2000, but more that he realizes that protracting the election is
going to bring his dirty tricks back into focus. He presumably also
realizes that his chances in the 2008 Presidential election have now
evaporated, and since he spent all summer telling people in Iowa and
New Hampshire that he hates being a senator, perhaps he's glad that he
won't be.

It's not entirely irrelevant. The 'Publicans have egregiously inserted
politics into science, and their spin has made it almost impossible to
have useful discussions about many things science.
For instance, the embryonic stem cell nonsense. The 'Publicans have
fought hard against it using the contention that it would mean the
killing of viable embryos.
But what exact embryos are being used? It's only 'spare' embryos left
over from in vitro fertilization. What would happen if the embryos were
*not* used in research? Loving cryogenic life for eternity?
Nope. The would be thrown out. Some might be 'adopted' and implanted in
other women. The majority, though, would be tossed out like so much
garbage.
But we haven't been able to have a real national debate on the issues
because it has suited the 'Publicans to cloud the issue in a way that
appeases their pro-life (well, except for war, and state-sponsored
executions. Oh, and all the folks that will have their lives shortened
and laid waste by diseases that could be ameliorated or cured by stem
cells. And of course the poor who...but even you get the idea)
constituency.
I look forward with relish to the real debate on the various scientific
issues that have been hijacked by the increasingly inaptly-named Right.
Tester and Webb are both claiming victory, and that gives the Democrats
49 and the Republicans 49. Since both independents (Lieberman (CT) and
Sanders (VT)) have said they'll caucus with the Democrats, that gives
them 51 seats. There's much horse trading yet to be done. Joe Lieberman
in particular expects to be rewarded for remaining in the caucus. I
imagine he would be cut loose in a second if one of the moderate Maine
Republicans (Snowe or Collins) could be flipped.
Allen and Burns (Montana) have yet to concede, as far as I know, but
Burns is behind by more than twice the margin for a recount. Allen
could get a recount, but he'd have to pay for it (between 0.5% and 1.0%
difference the challenger pays for the recount in VA.)
And it is neatly falsified because many "Darwinists" like me are
disappointed at the outcome.

Actually, I'm ready for this particular episode in my life to be over.
But if I *need* to delay, I technically don't graduate until June
(although they tell me that I can start calling myself "Dr." right
now.... I'm not sure how that works exactly). And although I passed,
they asked for some minor revisions to be done to my thesis before
everything is totally kosher (again, not fully understanding why I'm
allowed to call myself "Dr." now).
So, yeah, I've got a *little* room to put it off, but honestly, I'm
ready to be done. I'm twenty-seven years old; I'm getting a little

Ooookay, the title was "A Mathematical Model of Electrotonic
Interactions Between Human Ventricular Cardiomyocytes and Cardiac
Fibroblasts."
The 30-second version is that the fibroblast has been shown to form
resistive couplings with the surrounding myocytes within the
myocardium. It also expresses a number of voltage- and time-dependent
potassium currents which are fully active during the plateau phase of
the ventricular action potential. The importance of this is that the
myocyte's input resistance is the highest during the plateau phase, so
even a tiny current generated by the relatively tiny (~6 pF) fibroblast
can significantly affect the action potential waveform of the myocyte
to which it is coupled. My thesis consisted of the characterization of
the currents expressed in the cardiac fibroblast, the derivation of the
mathematical formalisms which dictate the coupling between fibroblast
and myocyte, and a study of the possible consequences of this coupling
for myocardial excitability and contractility.
