I'm not for all evolution. Would you want humans to become
parasites? What about how the males of some species of fish have
become rudimentary appendages fused to the females and carried around
like a tick. Some evolution would give me the creeps, and I would
object to evolving in those directions.

I am for all evolution. Whatever may be the result.

The rules of evolution are simple, sound and hard. That's the
attraction, apart from the beautiful result.

A-S-I, Nashton, etc, are you not going to ask the obvious question:

"Why hasn't such an bird evolved?"

If evolution was true, then it clearly would be very advantageos to be
such a bird from a "survival of the fitest" perspective.

(I think I know the answer.)

I too wish that the evidence supported a different explanation.
Preferately one that does not have me sharing common ancestors with
animals who kill other animals just because their egos have been
insulted. But I can live with common descent, and evolution, as long
as I have free will and am not forced to behave like my biological
relatives. Either way, none of that has any bearing whatever on what
the evidence supports. The most bizarre thing about evolution-deniers
is their refusal (or inability) to admit that. They almost always
start out pretending (or fooling themselves) that the evidence for
evolution is "weak," but if you let them talk long enough they admit
that their only objection is that they wish evolution weren't true.
Though some "deniers" like the inimitable David Klinghoffer go
straight to the punch line. Now he's blaming the Ft. Hood massacre on
"Darwinism."

Is it just me? It seems before about 1975, the "best" movies were
serious. From then until I stopped watching movies much, the "best"
movies were comedies. By "best" I think I might mean self consistent,
movies that could entice you into their world. _Bull Durham_ is one of
those movies, as is _Blazing Saddles_, _Princess Bride_, _Back to the
Future_, _Men in Black_, and of course _Monty Python and the Holy
Grail_. Given how few movies I watch I am sure there are others.

Now of course there are still serious movies, but I have a hard time
coming up with recent ones that I would consider exceptionally well
made, ones that can compete with _In the Heat of the Night_ or _The
Bridge Over the River Kwai_. (Well, OK, _Schindler's List_, but I
haven't seen that).

OK, I will stand back and prepare to be corrected.

For my money, the one that came out this year and that can properly
fit into this category would be: Watchmen. I grant that I was a fan of
the story all the way back to when the 12 issues were being published
in comic book form in the 80s. When I saw the first trailer for the
film
on the big screen, for the first time in I don't know how long (When
it
comes to new movies.), I just sat there, and went, "Oh wow, thats...
*perfect*." The last time I felt that way in a theatre was in December
of 2001, seeing a 70 MM print of 2001, A Space Odyssey.

> OK, I will stand back and prepare to be corrected.

Not corrected, as, in general, I am in broad agreement with your
argument. I myself, rarely go to movies these days, because they
are mostly, well, stoopid. In the last year, I saw the remakes of
The Day The Earth Stood Still, and Star Trek, and both were...
quite unsatisfying.

Frankly, better writing can be found on teevee, IF you look hard
enough and in the right places. That's why DVD box sets are a
wonderful thing.

Oh, and to add to the baseball theme: I am of the view that
Field Of Dreams is a truely *great* film.

This is one of the years that promises to have neither a Pac-10 nor
Big-Ten team in the Rose Bowl (this is the "championship" game this
year). Teams with two losses need not apply.

In a different year, maybe, but the Rose Bowl will have Texas, Alabama,
TCU, Cincy, Boise State or Florida attending. not Arizona or USC or any
other Pac-10 or Big-10 team the way things are going.

The Rose Bowl is a game between the Pac-10 and Big 10 champions.
The presence of Texas is quite unlikely.

In any case, given yesterday's performance by Arizona, never
mind...

Ah, never mind. I was under the erroneous impression that the game being
played on January 7 was a substitute for the Rose Bowl game on the
first. I didn't realize that Pasadena got to host two different games
within a week. My mistake.
