It has something to do with astrological sun signs, showing that the twits
can't even get part of the equation right.
I need a source that "explains" what a sun sign is and how it is determined.
It's very hard to find real information about the subject.
Don't know about sun signs, but I'd be happy to pull out the old Tarot cards
and do a reading for ya.

Have no idea what this has to do with evolution, but some phrases to
plug into search engines are "precession of the equinoxes",
"Hipparchus", and "tropical astrology" vs. "sidereal astrology".

Why do you think they call it the "Age of Aquarius" anyway ;-)

Maybe it would be easier if you looked in an *appropriate* newsgroup.

This is pretty OT for this group, but anyway...The sun sign system was
supposedly developed thousands of years ago. Your sun sign is supposed to
be determined, not by the month you were born, but by the constelation in
the sky at the time of your birth. Remember, it was devised by
geocentrists who thought the sun and stars orbited earth. So if you look
up in the sky in, say, August, you see the sun during the day and the
constelation Leo at night. So the "path" of the sun passed through Leo,
they said the sun was "in Leo" for that month (because the constelations
stayed visible for about a month, but the sun disappeared every day, so
they didn't say "leo was in the sun". Even those people knew the sun was
closer than the other stars.) That explains how sun signs are determined.
However, the equinoxes are precessing. The calendar months, with which
the signs are associated, no longer match the cycle that existed when the
system was developed. At one time, the vernal equinox occurred when the
sun was "in Taurus," but it gradually "slipped backwards" so that the
spring equinox occurred while the sun was in Ares, then Pisces, and now,
apparently, Aquarius. It takes a couple thosand years for the equinox to
precess through an entire zodiac sign.
None of this has anything real to do with determining your personality or
directing your fate. To put it bluntly, the size of the furniture in the
room at the moment of your conception exerts a greater influence on your
future life than the apparent position of the stars. Hope that answers
your question. Cheers;

I might try Webferret or Dogpile using the search as History of Astrology or
Precession of the Equinoxes.
This is the most common argument use to debunk Astrology.
Ophiucus should also be in the New List, According to Constelation
boundaries developed by Astronomers some years ago.
In Roman times, the boundaries of the constellations were roughly defined
by the place of the sun in them. Each Constellation gets 30 degrees with
zero defined as the place of the sun on the first day of spring during the
reign of Julius Caesar.
Since then, the constellations have precessed about one "Sign" since the
axis of the Earth makes one revolution in approximately 25,000 years.
Since Astrology is a form of Numerology anyway, the Modern
Astrologers refer as your "Sign" as the constellation that the sun WOULD
HAVE been in, had the zodiac not precessed.
somehow this is considered as a universal law, but lately some Astrologers
have been using "Sidereal" astrology in which precession is taken into
account.

If you read the other posts, you'll see this is a very appropriate group.
There is no alt.astrology.is.stupid.
I found the information I needed and was given clues on other phrases to
search on.
"Sun sign on my shoulders makes me happy" and the offer of a free tarot
reading topped off the thread.
The only thing missing was somebody asking what my sin was. (sqrt(pi/2))

Thanks. Most astrologers use birthdate as the big key so the movement and
size of the body of the doc delivering you would be the dominamt factor.
No, in fact it is not at all an appropriate newsgroup, and if you *really*
wanted an answer you would go to one of several astrology newsgroups and ask
*them*. In fact what you are interested in is astrology bashing. So why
don't you run along now.
If I want truth, appropriate to T.O. or not I'll ask here. Chances are
somebody has the answer. If I want mumbo jumbo, I'll ask there sine the
famed Pete Stapleton no longer visits here....
The signs they're using produce results that are _just_
as good as they'd get with the "right" signs...

To make a long story short:
The signs in your left column refers to when the sun used to
be in various constellations in Babylonian times, with corrections
to make the sun spend equal time in each despite the actual
constellations being of unequal size.
The signs in your right column refers when the sun spends time
in various constellations today, with similar corrections.
Plus, the sun spends a week or so in the constellation
Ophiuchus IIRC.
Of course, as we all know this is equally vital for the
correct functioning of astrology, and for keeping t.o
on topic.

sci.skeptic would be much more appropriate.

Astrology bashing? Is that a kind of Morris dance? I _knew_ there was
a reason to take up Morris dancing.

There can be _no_ idioic questions about fudge recipes (how did fudge
originate anyway? Was there prebiotic fugde?), or even vegertarian
chilli.
