Greetings.

I've noticed that posters here often find it difficult to communicate
with a certain regular by the name of Ray Martinez. After much
consideration, I have determined where the problem lies: Ray Martinez
does not speak English. Rather, he speaks some hitherto unknown
language which, while superficially similar to English, has its own
unique set of definitions and etymologies. Therefore, in the interest
of facilitating communication between Mr. Martinez and other denizens
of this newsgroup, I have taken it upon myself to compile a bilingual
Ray Martinez–English dictionary. To facilitate browsing I have
divided the dictionary into three broad subject categories: a general
lexicon, a historical/philosophical/scientific lexicon, and a lexicon
covering various terms involving discourse and debate. Wherever usage
of a term is not ubiquitous, one or more citations for the definition
(all of which come from Mr. Martinez himself) are provided.

Feel free to let me know if there are any important terms or
definitions I've left out.

Regards,
Tristan

I nominate Tristan's seminal piece of work for POTM.

If you are interested in pursuing this field further, perhaps you
should invite Uraniumcommittee to join your t.o. linguistics research
team. He seems to be an ace on providing definitions, and has years of
experience of translating Kant; it's possible that he also speaks
"ignorant [kant]"

What can I say -- I have an academic interest in kookery. If you're
interested in more of the same, I've written an extended treatise on
comp.ai net.kook Arthur T. Murray: <http://www.nothingisreal.com/mentifex>

I *am* a linguist; so that *was* my new project. ;)

I wasn't aware the Ray Martineze definitions differed from those in common
English usage. Care to enlighten me?

Very good, but there are a few omissions, I feel, to wit:

Heretical (as in Bible, The, Heretical sections of), Invulnerable:
Irrefutable: Forthcoming: Paper and of course 'Gene Scott', all of
which appear to have meanings that differ markedly in Martineze from
their accepted English usage.

Why single out Ray? All anti-evolutionists, in fact all
pseudoscientists, define terms to suit their argument. Why do you think
"Darwinism" is so popular?

Yes, all anti-evolutionists tend to define biological terms to suit their
argument. But Ray goes above and beyond this behaviour by redefining
common English words which are completely unrelated to science. Witness
his recent thread where he argues, post after post, that "in lieu of"
means "in consideration of"; his frequent invocation of ridiculous
etymologies (e.g., Mazatlan <- Atlantis) to "prove" some scientific point;
and his ubiquitous use of the equal sign to mean damn well anything he
pleases, including both equality and inequality in the very same sentence.

Tristan

Your "=" definition was masterly.

You were missing something from section III, though. Ray has an
idiosyncratic definition (aren't they all?) for the No True Scotsmen
fallacy which surprisingly does not equate to "inability to refute".
See: http://groups.google.ca/group/talk.origins/msg/0a43a4112480e878?hl=en&

"The core truth NTS is attempting to solidify is the deification of
Subjectivism. IOW, NTS is saying anyone who questions, or dares to make
an objective rendering = fallacy, since objective truth does not exist =
atheist philosophy; more accurately described in this context as
Idealism (as opposed to Realism)."

Ray has an interesting disconnect between the emic and the etic wrt the
variations on the word fuck. He has internal damping mechanisms that,
when *he* writes 'motherfucker,' et al, converts the words to something
innocuous, such as 'flower' or 'odd.'

OTOH, when someone else uses the same words in the same context, he
hears the words just fine, and is shocked, SHOCKED at the debasement of
the conversation.

That's gotta be some sort of linguistic hmmm.

[Where would we be without 'Casablanca' to bastardize?]

How many anti-evolutionists provide enough new definitions to deserve
their own dictionary?

Dembski probably deserves one of his own. There might not be as many
words as in the RM dictionary, but most words will probably have 3 or
more definitions.
