Resource Pointer #162

For copies of the following resources, please contact the appropriate
publishers or organizations directly.

                         ***

*Human Nature: Agricultural Biodiversity and Farm-Based Food Security,
1997.* Hope Shand. Provides introduction to agricultural biodiversity and
assesses extent of biodiversity loss in major food sectors, including
crops, fish, farm animals and microbial life. Stresses role of human
culture in maintaining biodiversity, and examines relevant international
policies and institutions for protecting these resources. 93 pp. US$10 in
US; US$20 overseas (50% discount for South NGOs). Rural Advancement
Foundation International (RAFI), P.O. Box 655, Pittsboro, NC 27312; phone
(919) 542-1396; fax (919) 542-2460; email rafi...@igc.org; web site:
www.rafiusa.org or www.rafi.ca.

*The Diversity and Dynamics of Shifting Cultivation: Myths, Realities and
Policy Implications, 1997.* Lori Ann Thrupp, Susanna Hecht and John
Browder. Describes global role of shifting cultivation--a system of
agriculture the authors say is often derided as "slash and burn"--and
examines positive, sustainable aspects of this approach. Defines shifting
cultivation as any system that involves clearing land (often with fire),
followed by phases of cultivation and fallow periods. Discusses how
shifting cultivators are able to respond to agroecological and
socioeconomic factors in dynamic ways, and can manage systems that are
highly productive. Explores myths and realities of these diverse systems,
and makes recommendations for development programs related to shifting
cultivation and its alternatives. 49 pp. $14.95. World Resources Institute,
1709 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20006; phone (410) 516-6963 or
toll free (800) 822-0504; web site: www.wri.org/wri.

*Food, Nutrition and Agriculture: From Famine to Food Security, Issue 19,
1997.* UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). (English, French and
Spanish). Trimesterly periodical on food security topics. This issue
includes articles on household food security in emergency relief programs,
children's nutrition during armed conflicts and preparation of food-based
dietary guidelines. Includes book reviews and news about food security
developments worldwide. 59 pp. Free subscription. Technical Editor, Food
and Nutrition Division, FAO, Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, 00100, Rome,
Italy; fax (39 6) 5705-3152; email f...@fao.org; latest issues are online at
www.fao.org/waicent/faoinfo/economic/esn/nutri.htm.

*The World Food Situation: Recent Developments, Emerging Issues and
Long-term Prospects, 1997.* Per Pinstrup-Anderson, Rajul Pandya-Lorch and
Mark Rosegrant. Projects growing "food gap" between haves and have-nots
worldwide, especially in low-income countries, and predicts increasing
price fluctuations in world food market. Perceives problem as primarily one
of inadequate food production, rather than distribution. Recommends funding
policies and programs that promote broad-based economic growth,
particularly aimed at improving productivity of small farmers. 36 pp. First
copy free. International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), 1200
Seventeenth St, NW, Washington, DC 20036-3006; phone (202) 862-5600; fax
(202) 467-4439; email if...@cgnet.com; web site: www.cgiar.org/ifpri.

*A Hidden Threat to Food Production: Air Pollution and Agriculture in the
Developing World, 1997.* Fiona Marshall, Mike Ashmore and Fiona
Hinchcliffe. Examines how air pollution affects not just health, but
agricultural production. Explores current and future importance of air
pollution as a constraint to productivity in developing countries, finding
that main pollutants of concern are ground level ozone, sulfur dioxide and
nitrogen dioxide. Recommends both reducing pollution at source and
developing agricultural systems that are less sensitive to pollution--for
example, through use of new fertilizers or crop breeds. 24 pp. For cost
information, contact International Institute for Environment and
Development (IIED), The Bookshop, 3 Endsleigh Street, London, WC1H 0DD, UK;
phone (44-171) 388-2117; fax (44-171) 388-2826; email books...@iied.org;
