beta-naphthylamine - bladder cancer, breast cancer, psoriasis,
allergies, rubber,
When will the insanity ever stop?
Why is it still being used, shipped, where is it being used? How is it
being disposed of? It is a known carcinogen esp for bladder. (what's
the connection between the water cooler coupling?)

Printing...hmm the guy next door who has a print shop got very upset
when he found out that the neighborhood kids were ripping open his
sealed up cardboard containers "there's dangerous dyes in there"..yet he
has absolutely no control over the kids coming back and opening more
containers..how to warn the kids?? they don't listen to me..I don't know
where they live..don't know their names or parents?

What's the connection with breast cancer? (the url is dead)

Recent patents? (see below)

Latex paints? Wonder if it's in the dyes used to colour frequently used
medications?

http://www.dir.ca.gov/Title8/5155table_ac1.html
Permissible exposure...how the frig can one person keep track of
exposures when they don't even know they've been exposed to being with
(unless someone knows that it's involved in their occupation and/or has
an acute exposure? This is truly a sick joke!!

Disposal of M-9 Detector Tape
PRO-ACT has recently received a number of inquiries about proper
disposal methods for M-9 detector tape. In response to these calls,
PRO-ACT researchers found
there are two types of M-9 chemical agent detector tape: an old variety
containing a dye comprised of 0.1% beta-naphthylamine, a suspected
carcinogen, and a
newer variety which contains a dye comprised of less than 0.1 parts per
million hexavalent chromium. Because of the extremely low levels of
hazardous materials
present in both types of M-9 detector tape, neither variety is
considered a hazardous waste.

According to Mr. Ken Kibler of San Antonio's Air Logistics Center
Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office, used M-9 detector tape is
considered a munition under
DoD Manual 4160.21-M-1, and as such, spent M-9 detector tape requires
demilitarization. Normally, this would involve incinerating, shredding
or pulping the tape.
However, M-9 detector tape has an exception and can also be
demilitarized by burial in a government-owned landfill.

For more information about the proper disposal of M-9 detector tape,
contact PRO-ACT at DSN 240-4214.

_I.A.4. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS (ORAL RfD)
Budnick et al. (1984) reported no statistically significant increase
in any
particular type of birth defect or in all types of birth defects in
residents
in the area surrounding the Drake Superfund site in Clinton County, PA

contaminated by beta-naphthylamine, benzidine and benzene.

(hmmm..they forgot the incidence of bladder cancer in same area, PA)..
but it is mentioned further down in relation to another area.
It should be noted that bladder cancer is twice as common in whites as
in nonwhites.

Cancer treatment?
http://www.healthgoods.com/Education/Health_Information/Cancer_Rates_and_Risks/immunosupressives.htm

In 1964, chlornaphazine, a drug used to treat polycythemia vera and
Hodgkin's
lymphoma, was withdrawn from the market because
it was found to cause bladder
cancer. Chlornaphazine is chemically related to
beta-naphthylamine, a chemical earlier
associated with bladder cancer among workers in
the dye industry. Drugs containing
inorganic arsenicals (e.g., Fowler's solution)
are also no longer in clinical use. However,
studies have shown that they can cause skin
cancer. These cancers are typically
multiple, involve unexposed parts of the body
and unusual locations, and are associated
with arsenical pigmentation and hyperkeratosis.

Other drugs have also been found to increase
the rate of human cancers. Pain-killing
drugs that contain phenacetin have been linked
to kidney cancers, and a
photochemotherapy regimen for psoriasis which
combines methoxysporalens with
ultraviolet-A exposure (PUVA) has been linked
with skin cancer.

For a number of other medications there is some
evidence of a cancer hazard, but
conflicting studies or other inconsistencies in
the evidence make them merely suspect.
For two such categories of drugs, coal tar
ointments and thiazide diuretics, the
accumulating evidence is particularly
worrisome. Coal tar ointments contain known
carcinogenic chemicals (polycyclic
hydrocarbons), and the relationship of use of these
ointments to risk of skin cancer has been a
matter of debate for some time. The evidence
from studies of psoriasis patients treated with
high doses over protracted periods at this
time seems to indicate an excess risk. more
later...
Wonder if people with psoriasis and/or cancer know about all this?

The letters are from former employees of a company in Spartanburg, South
Carolina,
which used the chemical Beta Naphthylamine in its operations in the
late 60's and early
70's. When the substance was determined to be a possible carcinogen,
the company
discontinued its use immediately. Although the company currently
conducts a screening
program of its own, these former employees believe that the company
should provide a
more extensive program. I have also enclosed a newspaper clipping
which explains the
situation in more detail. <end of snip>

Medical Screening requirements for employees previously exposed to
beta-Naphthylamine.
(how would some of them know? Many workers don't ask questions or read
labels of products that they are handling in their jobs). How many
years does it take for this type of cancer to develop or be diagnosed.
Who remembers back 20 or 30 years to the types of dyes they were exposed
to during some of their jobs? So how would they know to tell medics to
do the special screening for this?

is this being used for?)

Exposure to aniline dyes, especially benzidine and beta-naphthylamine,
are known risk
factors. Hematuria is the most common symptom of transitional cell
carcinoma, followed by
symptoms related to associated urinary tract infection. Dysuria is most
often seen with
high-grade tumors,as a result of bladder wall involvement.
(how many people get given anti-biotics when in fact, the blood found on
urinalysis is due to a cancer problem?)
How many women do undiagnosed because it is assumed there is another
unrelated reason for the blood showing up in the urine?) (see menses,
peri-menopause...)
How many men/women don't know there's blood in their urine, since it can
be occult or non-occult (ie can be seen to the eye or not). By the
time, it's seen, it has become very serious. iMO
