SIXTH TEST AT MORUROA HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR NUCLEAR TEST BAN
AUCKLAND July 17, 1991 (GP) -- Greenpeace today condemned France's
sixth nuclear test this year at Moruroa atoll, and called on the
New Zealand Government to support a Swedish proposal for a test
ban to be tabled at the Geneva Conference on Disarmament next
week.
Today's test of 35 kilotonnes, three times the yield of the
Hiroshima bomb, is likely to be the last French test this year.
"A ban on all nuclear testing is the only way we can make
this test not just the last for the year, but the last ever at
Moruroa," Greenpeace campaigner Stephanie Mills said. "New
Zealand should be giving high profile and vocal support to
Sweden's proposal for a total ban on nuclear testing on July
23rd in Geneva. This latest test shows again that the French
military will continue to arrogantly ignore the wishes of the
people of the Pacific until the whole of the international
community commits itself to a complete ban."
Stephanie Mills said that as the superpowers began to disarm
under the START agreements, France was continuing to test new
nuclear weapons.
"France is intent on continuing the nuclear arms race, while the
environment suffers," she said.
Greenpeace also called on the New Zealand Government to make a
formal public protest to the French Embassy in Wellington.
Stephanie Mills said Greenpeace was urging France to sign the
1963 Partial Test Ban Treaty and enter into negotiations on a
comprehensive test ban treaty.
France is currently testing for new M45 warheads for sea-
launched (Air-Ground long range missile) and the Hades tactical
surface to surface missile.
