Hmmm...gee...I dunno. 80% TV share. Says a lot to me about the
state of culture in the Excited States.

But then, I come from a country where we all watch grown men
chasing a piece of vulcanized rubber around a sheet of ice.

Ya know, what this trial REALLY needs is a half-time show! I think
that perhaps combining hockey and the legal proceedings would be a pretty
cool idea. "Judge Ito's Ice Capades." I like it. We could bring in
Tonya Harding to provide commentary. Except that given the
circus atmosphere of this trial, I wonder if anyone would even notice...

Yeah, like the rest of the world doesn't have violent crime?
Like the rest of the world doesn't have high-profile celebrity
cases?
Like there's noone outside of the U.S. who's interested in this
trial?
You're obviously interested enough to be reading this ng.
Don't be so hypocrital as to insist that you're not interested
in knowing how it turns out...

Sorry to interrupt. Everyone back to OJ, Wheel of Fortune and

Once again its THAT continent thinking their the only ones inhabiting this
planet.
Take a look around you boys and girls.

To answer you question, Football (or soccer as the uninformed call it).
I can't remember the last occupational death from pro football
yet It generates billions around the globe. At least 20 times
that of any North American sport.

I would imagine that football probably generates at least 10* the amount of
the Big 3 North American sports combined.

The above are only Guesstimates mind you :-)

If you want your message to be understood by most Americans, you should
refer to the most popular sport in the world as "soccer". Even though it
is known as football in most of the world, in America it is referred to
as soccer, and the word "football" is used to refer to an American sport
which is in fact one of the Big 3 here - the one that O. J. Simspon played.

What about the entire Zambian national side dying in the plane crash last
year. Let's not forget Man Utd.'s plane crashing in Munich in I believe
1959. This has no place on the oj simpson list but I couldn't resist.

I don't think you can call these accidents "occupational deaths" - or
would you add all the vitims of the Lockerbie-crash to the statistics of
their respective professions rather than to terrorism ?
the shooting of columbian soccer player escobar is more likely to meet
the above-mentioned concept, although it's not clear wether it had any
connection to organized crime or not.

My original reason for posting was - OK, we know about the OJ page, and
now
this drivel has spread to EVERY possible corner of public communication,
so
let's cut the comp.-related threads out of the discussion, but:

(begin obligatory grumbling)

I believe I heard that the largest spectator sport in North America is
the
NASCAR Winston Cup stock car racing series, drawing more attendees and
viewers per event through the season than other sports (call ESPN and
verify
for yourself). So what are the other two of the "Big 3"? :^}
My apologies to fans of foul-mouthed (b-ball) strike-happy (baseball &
hockey) hollywood showboating (football) greedy (all of the above)
"athletic"
sports icons. I used to be a fan of them too, until I realized that TRUE
sport
involves the one thing the others are forgetting - which NASCAR delivers
in
abundance - COMPETITION!

(end grumble)

[opinions expressed are mine only, and not the company's, etc...]
