An Honest American

By Aeren Martinez

I am an American, so can honestly say…
I want my big house and my big car,
I want technology to be tech yes for me
I want STATUS! I want my cake and eat it too!

So the summer is warmer?
TURN ON THE AC!
The winter storms colder?
Pump up the heat!

The ice cap's melting
the tide's arising
the river’s overflowing
but, I want my cake and eat it too!

Don't tell me that I've got to sacrifice
fix China, Asia, and Europe foremost.
I worked hard for all my stuff.
I deserve it! And I'm not giving it up.

So what if the air is un-breathable.
So what if the water is undrinkable.
So what if the coast is WIPED OUT!
I want my cake and eat it too!

And in their eulogies, it will be said,

"He never lied,
she never stole
and they never killed anyone."

Except, that by his selfishness;
he lied to himself, she stole the future
and in doing nothing —
they killed nature.

Oh foolish ones in foolhardy pursuits!
I anointed you guardians and you became users.
I breathed into you hope and you produced despair.
Where is the honesty you once professed to have?
