BUILDING COURAGE -- Judges 7:10-11 NIV

“If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp." So he and Purah his servant went down to the outposts of the camp.

Bless his heart, Gideon was really trying to do what God wanted him to do.  He had gathered this great army, and God sent almost everybody home.  Now, here he was with only 300 men against this huge encampment of Midianites.  And he was scared out of his wits.  God knew this and had compassion for him.  Since Gideon was so frightened, God told him to take his servant, Purah, with him and to sneak into the Midianite camp and listen to what the Midianites were saying.  God knew that once Gideon heard the Midianite soldiers talking, it would give him courage.  As always, God was right.  Gideon did sneak down with Purah and listen, and he heard the Midianite soldiers talking about how frightened they were.  They knew they were dead meat.  God had told them that Gideon was going to defeat them.  And they believed Him.

Many times, God tells you and me to do things that terrify us.  And He knows that we are terrified.  But He will give us the strength to do what He's told us to do.  And sometimes He gives us that strength in startling ways.  No matter what, like Gideon, we must be willing to do what God tells us to do, no matter how impossible or frightening it seems.  Like Gideon, we must be willing to take the first step.  And like Gideon, God will give us greater and greater strength as we continue to walk in faith with Him.

When I am afraid,
I will trust in you.

In God, whose word I praise,
in God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What can mortal man do to me?

Psalm 56:3-4 NIV
