LOOKING FOR GOD'S PURPOSE IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES -- Exodus 3:1-10 NIV

Exodus 3:1-10 NIV

I heard a story about a woman who decided that God wanted her to be a missionary in Africa.  Every day she waited for God to call her to this mighty mission.  When asked to help at her local mission, she said no, she was supposed to be a missionary in Africa.  When asked to call on prospects for her church, she said no, she was supposed to be a missionary in Africa.  When asked to host a Bible study in her home, she said no, she was supposed to be a missionary in Africa.  As far as I know, she's still waiting to be a missionary in Africa... and hundreds of people that she could have witnessed to and ministered to right where she lives never heard the Word from her.

Sometimes we let our imaginations run away with us when we think about God's possible purpose for our lives. It's pretty romantic to think about going to a foreign land and living with the natives, spending our days telling them about Jesus.  And we think that if God's going to call us, we have to be in the right place at the right time.  We have to be going to seminary or be in church every day or some other high-minded thing.  We could get so busy looking for God's purpose, we miss it altogether.

What was Moses doing when God called him?  He was going about his every day work, tending sheep.  He knew about the plight of his people. He had tried, in a blundering and violent way, to do something about it... on his own.  And he had blown it.  But when he finally settled down and went about his daily business, then God called him.

God has a redemptive purpose in your life, just as he did in Moses'.  So put your imagination to bed, and go about your daily life, keeping to the center of God's will.  When it is His time, He'll call you.  And if you're doing things His way, you'll hear Him, loud and clear.

"We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ."  2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV
