BY MY SPIRIT, SAYS THE LORD -- Judges 16:23-30 NIV
The Philistines were pretty proud of themselves... and of their god, Dagon. With shouting and revelry, they celebrated what they thought was a victory for Dagon. They believed Dagon had delivered Samson into their hands. But they had a lack of understanding of how God works. They didn't know that some time in the future, the ark of God would be placed before Dagon, and the giant idol would fall down off its pedestal. (1 Samuel 5:1-7 NIV) They didn't know that God's strength - His Spirit - out-numbers and out-powers all the armies that ever existed or ever will exist. What He created, He can destroy.
This is a fact that God has been trying to teach mankind since Adam and Eve. It was not the armies of Israel that took the Promised Land; it was the power of God Almighty. The people of Israel didn't cause the walls of Jericho to fall down; God did. The people did not make David King; God did. The Founding Fathers didn't establish the United States of America; God did. The people did not restore Israel as a nation; God did.
You didn't get the promotion at work because you did such a good job. God got it for you. You don't maneuver the freeways accident free every day because you're such a good driver. God's angels protecting your car from mishap are what get you there safely. You don't come through difficult surgery because you found the best surgeon for the job. God's guidance of the surgeon's hands and His protective hand on you are what get you through.
You and I do not achieve anything - anything at all - without God's assistance… and His permission.
So the next time you start feeling proud of yourself for your accomplishments, remember Samson. And remember this… “’Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty." Zechariah 4:6 NIV
