Hey everyone,
Just wondering if anyone else has been having frequnet problems with bad sets AND uses a medtronic pump.  I recently saw my doctor and told her I had been having more problems with bad sets lately and she thinks there is a problem with the medtronic resevoirs not working right.  One day, I had to change 5 times before I got one to work (which turns you into a lunatic!).  She has had many of her patients complaining of the same thing, but they used quicksets and I use a sillohuette..so the resevoirs makes sense.  I am calling Medtronic today!
thanks
Lindsey

Lindsey,

Three things:

#1 – I use quicksets, and for the first several years I used a pump never had an issue with them. Then, starting about a year ago I would say, on average 1 in every 10 has been faulty. And I did have one recent change time where I had to do it three times before I got one that functioned correctly.

#2 – Medtronic has sent me replacements for the faulty quicksets I encountered. They even will send you a special container to send them the faulty ones (for their research I assume) –if you still have them available.

#3 - Based on your e-mail, I am now going to start a log of any problems I have in changing pump related equipment. Maybe we, all of us on Medtronic pumps,  can compare notes via e-mail and/or at a meeting in 3 or 4 months. If you are interested in maintaining a log –just send a quick note and I will make a note to follow up on this a few months from now.

Stuart

This log is a great idea , if there seems to be a significant problem( as we are all thinking there may be) we could share this compiled data with medtronic.
I use the sillohuete and i can not honestly say if it is that or the reservoir that has been the issue.

Yes, that's happened to me recently as well. Two weeks ago I had a bad reservoir. The insulin was leaking and I wasn't getting appropriate doses. I was in the 400s the whole day and until I realized it was the reservoir and not the site or the tubing. It was a pain and it ended up exhausting me.

There's something going on...

I have had many bad sets.  I save them, with the intent to send them back, but have never gotten around to it.

you should call medtronic if you have bad ones, they analyze them.  And they usually send you new ones to replace those...at least they used to.  Then they send you a mailer that you can mail back with the bad sets and not need to add postage.  That makes it easier.

I hope everyone who sees the power in being able to communicate like this along with the great meetings (with educators, endocrinologists, companies), the conference, research updates etc., etc. take the time to join/sign up for the coming year.  One little piece of information picked up to help our health is worth much more than the $100 being requested.  I learn something new at each and every meeting.

Thank you Merle for all the hard work you have put in.

I have been listening to all of your responses as have one of my colleagues who has forwarded your concerns to our manager, who has forwarded on further up the chain. I will keep you informed as to the response. In the mean time, I encourage each of you to call the 24 hr helpline when these issues arise. The 24 hr helpline tracks all of these calls nationwide and is in a much better position to determine if there might be a problem with a particular lot number of supplies. And, as someone else mentioned, they will usually offer to replace the equipment and send a return label so you can send the faulty sets back. Medtronic actually does extensive testing on any supplies that are returned so they can determine the problem, if there is one.

I can't tell you how delighted I am to see you using tithe list serve in this manner. Of course, I would prefer that it was not about a Medtronic problem, but for each of you who thought that the problem was you, you now know that you were not the only one. I will keep you informed what I find out. Happy Holidays to all!

Kris,

Yes you are right, it is an excellent resource to have.

However, not all of us can spare the $100. I can barely buy groceries some weeks.

Thus, I communicate through the emails and try to give any kind of helpful diabetes information I may have.

I’ve had diabetes for 35 years and have several complications.

It’s very helpful for me to be able to communicate to other diabetics, even if I cannot afford the yearly fee.

Sincerely,

Natalie Helberg

Hi T1DL friends -   I've been a Medtronic customer for about 16 years now and use the IV Prep http://www.smith-nephew.com/us/professional/products/all-products/iv-prep/ which is generally enough but when in doubt I also use the  IV 3000 tape http://www.activeforever.com/p-4558-smith-nephew-opsite-iv-3000-dressing.aspx.  I've been happy with both of these products which I receive along with my Medtronic pump supplies covered by my insurance.

I'm so happy to see you are all using the listserve as I intended - to help resolve problems!  There are two Medtronic reps on this list who quickly reacted to your concerns passing on your messages to clinical management.   Linda is on the list not only to help with Medtronic issues but as a diabetes educator able to answer any diabetic related questions or concerns. This is just one of the many benefits offered by the T1D Lounge.

Natalie, you know you are always welcome to attend meetings regardless of ability to pay.  But unfortunately, living near Palos Hills makes this impossible.  I added you to the listserv so we can at least be supportive in some way.

Kris, thank you for recognizing the need for funding to keep the T1DL in existence.  There are costs involved in running this group and I appreciate those of you who have responded to the request for Annual Membership dues.       If you find value in these meetings and listserv there are various ways to give back - both finically and by assisting me with the T1D community.

As a side note, my regular email list (different from this google listserv) has a limit of 100 outgoing emails.  Along with you PWD, I have Endos, CDEs and medical reps on this list often exceeding 100 emails.  When this happens those who have not attended meetings for awhile are dropped off the list by necessity.

In the meanwhile we will await hearing back from Linda on the Medtronic concerns.

Best,

Merle

I know of a couple of women who rotate to the upper outer arm area and thread the tube up their sleeve, and wear the pump in their bra.  They say it is very comfortable.  When using your abdomen, try to rotate to the outer abdomen, sides, and even around to the low back if you can reach and if you have a little something to pinch back there.
