portage 是 gentoo 的软件仓库，仓库里包含软件的安装信息(ebuild script and etc)。你可以查看
/usr/portage 下的文件。
gentoo 是建立在源码库基础之上的，他需要ebuild脚本来配合emerge工具安装软件，比如如何获取源码，configure和编译安装等等……

emerge --sync就是更新 portage树。
除却gentoo的特性以外，sync和 ubuntu 的 sudo apt-get update没有什么分别。

例外问问怎么安装字体和配置Xorg，达到support Chinese呢？

感觉把弄gentoo（虽然还不完全，装的是sabayon）挺有意思，自己动手，满不错哈～

现在几乎没有人还用LANG="zh_CN.GB18030"了吧，都是 zh_CN.UTF-8
你试试换一下LANG变量。

gentoo下编码都装好了，但还不能用，要先定义
#localedef -c -i en_US -f ISO-8859-15 en_US.ISO-8859-15
然后输出，写到库里
#export LANG="en_US.ISO-8859-15"
#env-update && source /etc/profile

just edit /etc/locale.gen
then run locale-gen as root
