You need something like SYSMOD, a methodology for systems design.
There is a nice book explaining it.

keep in mind that SysML is a language, not a methodology.
there are a number of methodologies and processes that one may choose to work with, such as RUP or Harmony.
each methodology or process defines which diagram should be used, and when.

Or you can look at Harmony/SE, the process that Peter Hoffmann and I worked out and teach in our roles as Chief Systems Methdologiist and Chief Evangelist (respectively) for IBM Rational.  You can see some of the process in my latest book "Real-Time Agility". You can also see it at the IBM Rational web site: http://www-01.ibm.com/software/rational/services/harmony/.

Peter has a nice PDF that discusses it at http://download-na.telelogic.com/download/ugcagenda/Mon_HarmonySEASysMLBasedSystemsEngineering_PeterHoffman.pdf

There are two other books on SysML that I know of besides this one.
But none of them offers a precise, complete methodology, in my opinion.
I think it is going to be like UML, the first books will focus on
the notation and in a couple of years methodologies will emerge.

My favorite book among the three I know is:

S. Friednenthal, A. Moore, and R. Steiner, A Practical Guide to SysML:
The Systems Modeling Language,
1 ed.: Morgan Kaufmann OMG Press, 2008.

I have found Sandy's book exteremely useful and a delight to read. For beginners, Chapter 3 walks you through an example of how SysML may be applied in a project. This is a very useful.

Here you can find an online example of a SysML model: http://www.system-modeling.com/sysml_example.html

Suresh,
Whatever 'method' you choose to use, please keep track of the manhours
you spend in preparing all those diagrams and the errors found by
subsequent users. This will help you decide whether SysML is a viable
way to prepare prescriptive models of systems. Also, you might want
to ask all those who recommend methods to show you their data on this
productivity factor.
Onward,
Jack Ring
