Hi.

I'm happy to announce that SymPy was once again accepted by Google to
participate in Google Summer of Code for 2012.

They haven't yet updated their website, but when they do, I'll post
here information on what you should do if you're a student interested
in applying or a community member willing to help mentor.

Its good to hear that SymPy is selected for GSoC 2012. I had already seen your ideas page and is working now. Hoping to work with you soon.

Cheers

OK, the list has been officially published.

Actually, the list at google-melange.com only has those orgs who have
filled out their profile, so it will be missing a few until everyone
does this.

I should also note that Sage was accepted as a mentoring organization,
for the first time. Their project is very similar to ours, so I
encourage students who are interested in SymPy to check them out as
well as us.

Here's what you should do:

If you are a student interested in applying, the advice remains the
same as before. Read through
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/gsoc-2012-application-template and
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/gsoc-2012-ideas. Introduce
yourself here if you haven't already. Discuss your project idea(s)
with us. Submit a patch for your patch requirement. This would also
be a good time to start working on your application. If you put it on
our wiki, we will give you advice about it. The application period for
students starts March 26: 19:00 UTC and closes April 6: 19:00 UTC.
It's better to get this done earlier than later.

If you are a community member who is wiling to help mentor, or even if
you want to just help us review applications, please go to
http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/org/google/gsoc2012/sympy and click
on "Register" where it says "mentors: apply!". Then, fill out the
forms, and if everything works out, you should be entered into the
mentoring system (I'll have to accept your request). Once you are in
the system, I will send you an invite to join our mentoring list.

Finally, we will need help reviewing patches that students submit for
patch requirements. As those of you who were around before and after
we were accepted last year know, things are about to get very busy
around here.

Let's make this year our best GSoC yet!

Congratulations to SymPy.

I have applied for mentorship this year.
I would like to mentor, perhaps along with Mathew, any student undertaking a project on linear algebra, especially if someone is willing to undertake the task of merging the Sparse Matrix classes.

Because I have been busy with college, I have not been able to find time for this. But, I hope my work will be merged in this summer.

Best,
Sherjil Ozair

I want to help you review applications or as a backup mentor. I am
GSoC mentor since 2008 and GCI mentor since 2010.
