Hi All,

I'm chasing some knowledge from the collective wisdom on this list! :)

I would like to have a go at printing PLA, and I have access to an Up! at work.

Has anyone actually had reliable success printing PLA through the Up! printers? If so, how did you go about doing it? In particular, was the print quality as good?

Thanks all!

Tristan

The new Up!s will not print with PLA nicely, the extruder stepper runs too hot.  Franc has partial success with putting 4587349534 heatsinks and 92347 fans on it ;P

I would not recommend it.

I actually recommend against PLA - why use PLA? :)  Beg Gav when he comes back to use his Replicator2 if you really need it for casting or something...

More than partial success - I've not had a PLA print fail that couldn't attribute to my own stupidity.

cheers

Thanks Franc & Madox,

Franc - do you have a detailed list of mods that you have made?  Perhaps some photo's of the printed part quality?

I have no problems with ABS, I just want to try out the casting trick. :)

This is what I did - the design is not great, but works.

I did some nice prints of Yoda in the glow-in-the-dark-pla, but the photos have been lost to the horror of g+ ;-(

You posted it on 11/04/2012 but the quality of the photo is not good...

i found for the best results was to actually run it on the fast abs setting, however i had to drill out the hotend bore to 2mm to get it to work properly, i do recommend getting  piece of glass made up to fit the table (140mmx140mm) and print raftless

My experinece (Up! Plus):

In some cases I've found PLA to be better than ABS (even the Up-branded ABS).  I used a combination of the PLA setting and the resistor "trick" to lower the temperature of the hotend.  The only issue I've had is spiderweb "strings" in some areas (when it's moving between print sections).
