This $3.00 device has 100 uses around the hacking establishment:

Grr. I'm getting sick of this sort of irritating click-through
no-content spam, and the general level of uninformed bullshit you post.
It's an LED panel meter, for fuck's sake.

Jaye.

A bit blunt, but I pretty much agree. And we've had loads of comments along the same vein over the years.

David, if you could meditate on the topic of 'signal to noise ratio' regarding your posts before you hit send, we'd all much appreciate it.

On tuesday night we were working on a bicycle voltage booster
at the space. Something like that would have been handly to
measure voltages coming out of the dyno and into the
step up regulator.

So it's use relates to this weeks activity at the space.

Sorry I can't afford all the fancy tools the other people have.

Then post it in the thread about the dyno.

Also, If people are asking for expert advice or opinions on things you're not an expert in please don't post links to ebay or ali express.

No. Don't go playing "poor me". If you're going to post something like
that, why wouldn't you actually think about what you post, and go with a
subject line like "Cheap LED panel meters on EBay!". People can then
ignore it or not as they choose.

Show a little consideration for other people's time, and the content
level of the list.

Jaye.

Well, I will add those to the list of censored sites.

My meaning was that you often post links to stuff for sale when the original post was asking for advice.

David, this isn't a question of censorship or specific sites being forbidden.
  • This month, you've posted 4 times as much as anyone else in the group. Something similar happens every month. And, bluntly, the signal to noise ratio of your posts is terrible.
  • You consistently give out advice in fields it's very apparent you're not an expert in. Hearing you offer to VPN to Talsit's machine to fix his USB was pretty darn painful.
  • Many of your emails seem to operate on the assumption that others don't have access to google. Yes, we know dealextreme sells some stuff. If you've used a product, or there's a specific reason you think it is relevant and the person is able to implement it then go ahead. But most of the time you're posting about a product you haven't used, is only vaguely relevant, and would require expertise that neither you or the other person in the post have. As such, posting it is just a waste of other people's time. We've had lots of complaints about your 'linkspam'.
We have tried to give you gentle heads up about this in the past, but you haven't taken it on board. Please, take the hint.

No, actually, it wouldn't have been 'handly' or even handy. Do you
even know how to use a panel meter or know what it's good for? Also,
your solution to that problem was frankly dangerous (to electronics,
if not to people). I realise that free advice is usually worth what
you pay for it, but some people might be innocent enough to not
understand that caveat donatarius applies even more than caveat
emptor.

(as a complete aside on the dyno thread - I'm not sure if you have
seen the various rants people have about power factor, but the output
of the dyno was a classic example of flat-topping and the distortion
of an input AC waveform due to diode-capacitor power supplies. I
didn't get a good screen grab of it unfortunately.)

How is that any handier than a multimeter?

btw, jaycar have multimeters for $5
They are rather handy to have around and if you accidentally measure the amps of your car battery rather than the voltage, oh well ;->
I also have a decent meter for doing good stuff, I have seen some fluke brand ones around for < $100 which I'm finding quite tempting.

Dave Jones/EEVBlog recently did a tear-down of the Jaycar $5 multimeter...
