Hi All,

Could you please answer belwo my questions

What are all ther Oracle Versions Powerbuilder 6.5 supports?
Is PB6.5 supports Oracle 10g?

In my experience, 7 through 9. Since the PB driver talks to the Oracle
client on the workstation, which talks to the server, chances are good that
it will talk to 10g. You may have to have a version of the client below the
latest so that the PB driver can talk to it.

I am not undestood it fully on whethere PB6.5 can connect to Oracle10g

Hi Siva;

Funny that you ask this question. I just helped a friend of mine with PB
and O10g. He was having difficulties connecting to the DBMS in production.
Turns out that the client's site has lower versions of the Oracle client
installed in development, but not in production. He was using PB 9.0.3 and
had to migrate his application to PB 10.x to be compliant to the 10g client.

So the answer to your question will probably depend on what Oracle
client is still available to your old PB 6.5. However, saying that - using
an older DB client is like getting a new engine in your car and neglecting
to replace the transmission. It might work (for a while) but you could be in
for some problems using certain features or under heavy load. You have to
remember that PB 6.5 is also ANSI and Oracle 10g is Unicode. So that could
be another interesting scenario.

PowerBuilder does not connect to the database server directly, it actually
connects to the Oracle Client software.

So if you have a version of the Oracle Client that PB6 works with and that
version of Oracle Client works with 10g, then you will be able to use PB6
with 10g.

If you have the 817 oracle client, then you can use the O84 driver to
connect to 10G. I don't have 6.5 installed anymore, so I can't guarantee it
will be foolproof. I did try using 9i client with PB6.5 and that did not
work. You will need to patch your PB to 6.5.1 and then apply EBF 1299 or
1326. Off course, the better solution is to upgrade to a supported version
of PB (11.x).

I'm not an Oracle expert but if he gets PB6.5 working with the 817 client,
there probably will be new features/datatypes added in 9i and 10g that won't
work.

An upgrade to PB11 and the 10g client would be the best move.

Very true. You basically get to use 8i features only. Typically that's not
a big issue. A lot of the newer 9i/10g/11g features are more database
related and don't affect the programmer's side as much.
