trade off of locking scheme modification

Hi,
We modified massively the lock scheme of more than 400 tables from
'All Pages' to 'Data Only Lock' and the system got quickly strangled
by I/O overload.
Is thare a link between this new locking scheme and the number of I/O
on the disk ?
Sybase 12.5.4 on Unix Log and Data on same discs

Yes, quite possibly. You need to look at the impact of deleted rows and row forwarding, and make sure you have a regular maintenance window in which to reorg the DOL tables.
