Hello - a cheeky request really, but has anyone created a presentation for a primary school audience? I would welcome any tips or materials if you are willing/able to share! I am happy to share anything at all that Brecon Swift group has or does of course!

Second year that 'our' three eaves nests are empty. Two on another house are occupied though. Holding my nerve and getting my caller ready!

Thank you all very much,

I recently posted an idea for cooling boxes in a hot loft here
<https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1082619267230354&id=100064468728739>
I have to report that it doesn't work. Probably needs larger diameter
tubes. So we have redeployed the extractor fan to suck air out of the loft
into the soot door in the chimney, controlled by a thermostat. It seems to
move plenty of air. Will report back on whether it is enough.

Thanks, Dick - nice to hear from you.

Not sure of the "type" of brick, but photo attached. Lots used by HS initially early in the season, but opening just too small for SG. To have 100% brick occupancy on the Estate by Swifts is pretty good, I think.

I attach, for all to see, our report from 2024 and it shows the use being made of the artificial spaces installed by New Forest District Council following a local protest, when existing holes/nest sites were blocked for renovations in 2011/2012. The subsequent uptake has been amazing - 71 apparently occupied Swift nests in 2024 and, most important 100% occupancy of the Swift bricks.

Hi Talya

This is a private app, kindly created for the SLN by Dave Kilby out of his own love for swifts.

Sorry, I should have enclosed this later set of instructions created by Camilla, which has a web link. She has also set up the following email address for any questions: swiftch...@gmail.com<mailto:swiftchurchapp@gmail.com>.

Bedfordshire Swifts paid the first annual fee last year to use the Coreo platform (the same as is used by Swift Mapper), but obviously this app didn’t have the same level of developer time, so isn’t as polished as SM.

It was created initially for public buildings with large colonies e.g. churches (Dick’s list of churches are logged on there), hospitals, libraries. But there’s no reason why it couldn’t be used for a named community group of small colonies which is being monitored.

Take a look and see what you think.

Laurinda

I attach, for all to see, our report from 2024 and it shows the use being made of the artificial spaces installed by New Forest District Council following a local protest, when existing holes/nest sites were blocked for renovations in 2011/2012. The subsequent uptake has been amazing - 71 apparently occupied Swift nests in 2024 and, most important 100% occupancy of the Swift bricks.

T Davies <talya...@googlemail.com>: May 12 03:45PM +0100

Thanks Laurinda,

I'm not sure if it's appropriate, could you tell me?

There are 9 known natural nests hereabouts, and an unknown number of
unknown ones, all in the streets nearby, and we don't know how far the area
stretches. I'm sure it's a colony or a group of colonies as far as the
Swifts are concerned, but then isn't everywhere? And we have Swiftmapper
for that? If the criteria is monitoring, we don't formally monitor other
than a swift walk every year, and recording on swiftmapper.

I think we get the same bunch of screamers going between them all. We have
a WhatsApp group so we can tell each other how many we spot when and where,
but of course it's still difficult to tell!

It's really interesting when we see a much larger group of swifts, higher
above, all circling and screaming to each other. This tends to happen when
the second wave arrives, but I also saw it on a smaller scale yesterday, so
I don't know what that was about. I presumed it was groups of nearby groups
all communicating with each other, but maybe it was just swifts passing
overhead for another reason. Although when that happens it looks more like
a steady stream all going in the same direction.

Best wishes,
Talya

Subject: [SLN] New Swift colony app - updated Guide!!

Hi Talya

This is a private app, kindly created for the SLN by Dave Kilby out of his own love for swifts.

Sorry, I should have enclosed this later set of instructions created by Camilla, which has a web link. She has also set up the following email address for any questions: swiftch...@gmail.com <mailto:swiftchurchapp@gmail.com> .

Laurinda

Does this include groups of small colonies? Is there a link for the app? I've never heard of it before.

The idea behind the new Swift colony app is that this could be shared across all the SLN for recording large colonies and monitoring them year on year.

Please do give this app a try and let Camilla and Jon Barlow know your thoughts/comments.

100% occupancy is amazing. We need to learn from this. What was key to this do you think ? Also is there a central resource where this kind of information is kept.
If not I expect Hannah is collecting all examples so I might have the best resouce if it can be shared when completed.

That is very interesting.

We have had great success with occupancy of nest bricks in our cottage: most recently in AfS S-bricks, 2 of 3 occupied within 2 years (picture attached).

Also 9 out of 10 Cambrdge systems occupied; and 5 out of 6 Schwegler 25s in the first year; At our community centre, 4 out of 4 Schwegler 1As occupied , where we played calls - picture shows them before the wall was rendered.

Our next challenge is to monitor 50 bricks that have been incorporated at 1:I ratio in a small new housing estate, after we obtained a planning condition. The contractor installed Manthorpes.

Hi all,

I have read in Hannah's book that swifts nest sites are protected all year
in many countries in the EU. Can someone tell me which countries these are.
Wouldn't it be great if we could legislate for this in the UK.
Of course I know they are protected when they are actively nesting.
