Hi Sue,

I find I always hate it when a user interface changes, and I have to be patient with myself while I get my head around a new interface.

I don't have a quick answer to alleviate your pain. If you want me to remove you then we can do that. I would say that, normally the traffic on SLN is not that large, so when things settle down you could give single emails a try again.

I'm afraid I don't like the new Google group at all.  This Yahoo version suited me well, I had a digest and just skimmed down the headings and only when there was something of interest would I skim down to the fuller text.  You very kindly altered my preference on Googlegroup to a digest - before that it was totally unacceptable with a bombardment of emails.  However, the digest is poorly laid out - very muddled and difficult to pick out highlights.  I'm afraid for me it's a case of "TLDR" ("Too Long, Didn't Read")  As it would appear I'm likely to end up deleting the Googlegroup digests without reading them, it seems a bit of a waste of time for me to continue as a subscriber.  If you get some time tomorrow, can you tell me a simple way out of this difficulty or should just unsubscribe?

I’m not sure what the setting is in Google Groups, but it looks to me as if you haven’t quite got the digests set up right. If you compare to the Cambirds digests, you will see that the email is formatted with the topics separated out one-per-line at the top of the message and then the body is also separated into ‘topic boxes’. In the SLN digest, you just have a single header, saying there are N updates in M topics, and then you have to swim through the whole thing with no organisation to the topics. I will take a look and see if I can spot the setting on Cambirds. It’s clear from this comparison that the SLN digest can be improved, we just need to figure out how to do it!

As a sidebar, I have not regretted for one moment the move from Yahoo for Cambirds, and especially now that Yahoo Groups has moved to being ‘email only’ with no web posting on the forums.

Dick,

Just looked at [cambirds] and the things I can see in ‘Manage Group’ settings are:

1. Under ‘Information | General information’ - Allowed topic types are set as ‘Discussions and questions’, but then Default topic type is ‘Discussions’.

2. Under ‘Information | Web view customisation’ — Conversation mode is ticked.

Other than those I can’t see any settings which would affect the digest format. On the web, the ‘Topics’ display looks exactly the same as for Cambirds. Possibly worth pinging the Google Groups admins a message to see if they have any insight.
