Hi,

I am a SW resident and dog owner who lives on 4th and I St. SW. I am submitting comments on the Lansburgh Dog park application submitted by Paws of Southwest.

We are in desperate need of a pet friendly area in SW. Driving south to Shirlington VA is just not a feasible solution during the week.

Besides giving our dogs a much needed legal space to play, the biggest benefit that a dog park in SW would offer is that it would make our neighborhood a more family friendly neighborhood. Right now, DC is not being developed as a place for young people to grow into a family and stay, since there is a lack of public spaces for children AND dogs, as young adults exit their 20s, they are forced to move elsewhere to gain access to the amenities that this city does not offer. Adding this dog park is something that will make living in the city a more viable option for families. This will keep tax payer money in the city and help SW grow.

I believe though that the park needs to be a bit bigger and longer, as I think the current proposed shape of the park might now give the dogs enough room to run after a ball. Additionally, since this is the ONLY dog park option for SW within walking distance, I am not sure the 15,000 will accommodate all of the dogs- more space is needed. SW has A LOT of dogs, and I think that the park will be so popular it will get rather crowded.  Additionally, more trees and benches are needed. I am unable to walk long distances or stand for long, and a good place to sit at the park would really be helpful.  Lastly, another very important aspect for the park is to have water available. A water spout so that we can put water in a bowl or let pets drink from it would make the park so much more enjoyable so that during long hot summer days, the dogs can play without overheating. A recommendation for a spout would be that it is on some sort of cement pad so that it does not create a muddy mess.

Thank you so much for making our dream of a dog park that much closer to reality!!!!!!! We need it so bad, and this will make a great SW even better!

You made excellent points about other amenities that need to be
incorporated into the dog park. Thank you so much for raising these
points. I truly hope you were able to submit these comments directly
to the DC Department of Parks and Recreation yesterday.
